Chapter 2: The Brother Who Returned from the Grave

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The only sound was the distant hum of the sedan's engine.

Vittorio stared at Alessio.

Two years earlier, he had buried his brother beneath a stone cross overlooking the sea.

He had identified the body himself.

He had stood beside the grave while priests prayed.

He had mourned.

He had blamed himself.

Now the dead man stood ten feet away.

Alive.

"How?" Vittorio finally asked.

Alessio's expression darkened.

"I never died."

The words struck harder than any bullet.

"What are you talking about?"

"The body wasn't mine."

A silence followed.

Then Alessio continued.

"The ambush in Calabria was real. The men who attacked us were real. But I survived."

"Then why disappear?"

"Because the people who ordered the attack were inside our own organization."

Vittorio's eyes narrowed.

Alessio looked toward the villa.

Toward Isabella.

Toward the false driver.

"Someone very close to you."

The pieces began fitting together.

Not all at once.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Like shards of broken glass.

For two years Alessio had remained hidden.

Watching.

Listening.

Building evidence.

Waiting.

He had discovered a secret alliance between Isabella, several corrupt captains, and rival Sicilian families.

Their plan had taken years to build.

First Alessio.

Then Vittorio.

After that, the Morelli empire.

All of it would belong to them.

"And today?" Vittorio asked.

"Today was the final move."

Alessio handed him a folder.

Inside were photographs.

Bank transfers.

Recorded conversations.

Secret meetings.

Enough evidence to destroy everyone involved.

Vittorio flipped through the pages.

Every document confirmed the same truth.

His wife had betrayed him.

Not for months.

For years.

Meanwhile, across the driveway, Isabella still believed her plan was working.

She checked her watch.

The bomb should have exploded by now.

Her smile began fading.

Then she noticed something.

The men emerging from the SUVs.

The weapons.

The expressions.

And finally—

Vittorio.

Standing very much alive.

Her face turned white.

The false driver immediately reached inside his jacket.

Big mistake.

Gunfire erupted.

Two of Vittorio's guards tackled him before he could draw.

Within seconds he was pinned to the ground.

The bomb squad moved toward the sedan.

The conspiracy was collapsing.

Fast.

But Vittorio's attention remained fixed on one person.

His wife.

Isabella stared at him.

Neither spoke.

Not yet.

Because some betrayals are too large for words.

Then she ran.

Not toward him.

Away.

Straight toward the villa.

Toward the panic room hidden beneath the estate.

Toward the escape tunnel only three people knew existed.

Or so she thought.

Alessio sighed.

"She still doesn't know I designed this house."

Vittorio almost smiled.

Almost.

The hunt was over before it began.

They found Isabella trapped inside the tunnel fifteen minutes later.

Alone.

Terrified.

With nowhere left to run.

For the first time in years, she looked exactly like what she was.

Not a queen.

May you like

Not a mastermind.

Just a woman whose lies had finally run out.
