CHAPTER 2 : THE SECRET VANESSA NEVER WANTED EXPOSED

Security moved toward the men.

But Clara grabbed Ethan's arm.

"Don't."

Her voice was desperate.

"They work for him."

Ethan stared at her.

"For who?"

Clara swallowed hard.

Then she pointed.

Not at the strangers.

At Vanessa.

The entire room froze.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"This woman is insane."

But Clara wasn't looking at the guests.

She was looking directly into Ethan's eyes.

"Your fiancée tried to kill me."

The ballroom exploded.

Vanessa's face lost all color.

Ethan stepped back.

"What are you talking about?"

Seven years ago, Clara had discovered evidence of corporate fraud inside Blackwell Industries.

Millions of dollars were disappearing through shell companies.

When she started investigating, someone learned she knew too much.

One rainy night her brakes failed.

The crash wasn't an accident.

A fisherman found her alive.

Barely.

With no memory.

For years Clara lived under another identity in a small coastal town.

Then six months ago her memory returned.

And so did the danger.

She started digging.

Following money trails.

Looking for answers.

Eventually every path led to the same person.

Vanessa.

The woman now standing beside Ethan.

The woman who had spent years becoming part of their family.

Vanessa shook her head frantically.

"She's lying."

But Clara pulled a flash drive from her pocket.

"I brought proof."

The FBI agents arriving behind the suited men took the drive.

One of them nodded.

"We've been investigating this case for months."

The guests stared in shock.

Then the lead agent turned toward Vanessa.

"Ma'am, you're under arrest."

Vanessa tried to run.

She barely made it three steps.

The handcuffs clicked shut.

Sophie buried her face in Clara's shoulder.

Ethan stood frozen.

Because the woman he almost married had spent seven years destroying his life.

And the woman he never stopped loving had finally come home.

But one heartbreaking question still remained.

Why had Clara never contacted them after regaining her memory?

The answer would hurt even more.
