Chapter 1: Shattered Glass

Silence swallowed the ballroom.

The elegant blue spotlights that had bathed the reception in a soft glow now felt cold and unforgiving, turning the lavish venue into something that resembled an interrogation chamber.

Eleanor slowly lifted a trembling hand to her cheek.

When she looked at her fingertips, they were shaking.

The arrogance that had filled her eyes only moments earlier was gone. In its place was raw panic as she stared at the man standing before her in the gray tuxedo.

"You're dead."

The booming voice shattered the silence.

Richard stormed through the circle of stunned guests with two broad-shouldered security guards at his side.

"You laid a hand on my wife, Vance," he growled. "You're finished."

Vance didn't react.

He didn't even bother looking intimidated.

One hand remained firmly on young Leo's shoulder, steady and reassuring.

Then he rose to his feet in one smooth, controlled motion.

Without a word, he stepped in front of the boy, shielding him from Richard and the growing crowd.

"She assaulted the sole heir of the Sterling estate," Vance said.

His voice wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

Every word carried effortlessly across the silent ballroom.

"Under the trust's bylaws, that constitutes an act of treason against the family."

He looked directly at Eleanor.

"Her authority is now void."

Richard let out a bitter laugh.

"He's just a child," he snapped. "I'm the one running this board."

Vance reached into the inside pocket of his tailored jacket.

The crowd stiffened.

Several guests instinctively stepped backward.

Instead of a weapon, he withdrew a thick envelope sealed with heavy gold wax.

He dropped it onto the polished marble floor beside Eleanor's veil.

The sound echoed through the room.

"Not according to his father's final directive," Vance replied.

His eyes never left Richard.

"The wedding is over."

He bent down, lifted Leo effortlessly into his arms, and turned toward the ballroom entrance.

"The heir is leaving with me."

No one moved.

No one dared.

As Vance walked away carrying the boy, the crowd instinctively stepped aside, parting like water before a ship.
