Chapter 1: The Hidden Name

The first week inside Harrington Estate taught Elara one important lesson.

The wealthy rarely looked down.

Not because they were kind.

Because they never believed anything important could exist beneath them.

Servants moved through the mansion like shadows.

Invisible.

Ignored.

Which made them the perfect witnesses.

Elara listened.

She listened while polishing silver trays.

She listened while changing flowers in hallways.

She listened while serving tea during family meetings.

And little by little, fragments of the truth began to emerge.

One evening, while cleaning the west wing library, she discovered a locked cabinet hidden behind a row of old books.

Most people would have walked away.

Elara didn't.

Inside the cabinet she found a faded photograph.

A young woman stood beside Richard Harrington, the family patriarch.

The woman was smiling.

In her arms was a baby girl.

On the back of the photograph, written in elegant handwriting, were four words:

"For our daughter, Elara."

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Colder.

The photograph slipped from her trembling fingers.

Her entire life she had believed she was an orphan.

A nobody.

Yet here was proof that someone had once claimed her.

Someone connected to the Harrington family itself.

But before she could examine the evidence further, footsteps echoed down the corridor.

Victoria Harrington entered the library.

Her sharp blue eyes immediately noticed the photograph.

For a brief second, genuine fear crossed her face.

Then it vanished.

"What exactly are you doing?" Victoria asked.

Elara lowered her gaze.

"Cleaning, Miss Harrington."

Victoria stepped closer.

Too close.

Her smile was perfect.

Her eyes were not.

"Some doors stay closed for a reason," she whispered.

Then she walked away.

Leaving Elara with a warning she would never forget.

That night, Elara realized one thing.

May you like

She wasn't searching for the truth anymore.

The truth had started searching for her.
