CHAPTER 1 The Girl Who Broke the Coffin

The sanctuary remained frozen.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
For several seconds, the only sound inside the grand white chapel was the faint crackle of the broken coffin lid lying on the marble floor.
The girl stood there, shaking.
Her orange shirt was stained with dust from the shattered wood. Her white apron was torn near the shoulder. She looked nothing like someone who belonged at a funeral surrounded by wealthy mourners dressed in expensive black suits.
But everyone knew her.
Her name was Emma Carter.
A twenty-four-year-old kitchen assistant who had worked at the Harrington estate for nearly six years.
A girl most people ignored.
A girl who cleaned tables, served meals, and disappeared into the background.
Until today.
Until she destroyed the coffin of one of the most powerful men in the city.
Inside the coffin was the body of Richard Harrington.
Billionaire businessman.
Founder of Harrington International.
A man whose death had been called a tragic accident.
A man whose funeral had attracted politicians, celebrities, and some of the richest families in the country.
And now a poor servant girl had just broken open his final resting place.
The older woman in the mourning veil stepped forward.
Her name was Victoria Harrington, Richard’s widow.
Her voice trembled with fury.
"You have lost your mind."
Emma didn't answer.
Her eyes were still locked inside the coffin.
Something was wrong.
Terribly wrong.
The crowd began whispering.
"She attacked a coffin..."
"Someone call security."
"She's insane."
But Emma barely heard them.
Because what she saw inside the coffin was not what she expected.
The entire reason she had risked everything...
The reason she had been willing to destroy her reputation...
The reason she had been willing to go to prison...
Was gone.
Her hands slowly dropped to her sides.
"No..." she whispered.
A young man approached.
He was wearing a perfectly tailored black suit.
Cold expression.
Sharp eyes.
His name was Daniel Harrington, Richard's only son.
"What did you see?" he demanded.
Emma looked at him.
For the first time, Daniel noticed something strange.
She wasn't angry anymore.
She was afraid.
"Your father..." Emma whispered.
Everyone leaned closer.
"What about my father?"
Emma swallowed.
"Your father is not the person you think he was."
The room exploded with murmurs.
Victoria immediately stepped forward.
"Enough!"
She pointed toward the guards.
"Remove her."
But Emma suddenly screamed.
"Nobody touches me!"
The force of her voice shocked everyone.
She reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a small envelope.
"I came here because I found this."
Daniel stared at it.
"What is that?"
Emma looked down.
"A letter."
Victoria's face changed.
Only for a second.
But Emma noticed.
And so did Daniel.
"You know about this," Daniel said quietly.
Victoria said nothing.
The room became colder.
Emma slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten note.
A note written by Richard Harrington.
A note dated three days before his death.
She lifted it.
And read the first sentence aloud.
"If you are reading this, it means Victoria succeeded in burying the truth with me."
Everyone went silent.
Daniel looked at his mother.
Victoria's expression finally cracked.
"That's impossible."
Emma continued.
"My death was not an accident."
A wave of shock moved through the chapel.
Richard Harrington...
The billionaire everyone believed died in a car crash...
Had left behind a warning.
Emma looked at Daniel.
"Your father knew someone wanted him dead."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Who?"
Emma looked back at the coffin.
Her voice became almost a whisper.
"He didn't write a name."
She paused.
"He wrote a warning."
Daniel's face hardened.
"What warning?"
Emma unfolded the paper completely.
The final sentence was visible.
And when Daniel read it...
The color disappeared from his face.
May you like
Because his father had written:
"Trust nobody in this family."
