Chapter Six The Boardroom

The boardroom at Vale Estate had not changed in forty years.

The same walnut table stretched beneath exposed oak beams. Framed photographs of past harvests lined the walls. At the far end of the room hung a black-and-white portrait of Eleanor's grandfather standing beside the first vines planted on the property.

Every important decision in the estate's history had been made in this room.

Today would be no different.

At nine o'clock sharp, the directors began arriving.

Margaret distributed folders without comment.

No one knew why Eleanor had called an emergency meeting with less than twenty-four hours' notice.

They knew only one thing.

When Eleanor Vale marked a meeting as mandatory, attendance was not optional.

Richard Halston entered last.

He placed a sealed envelope before every board member.

"Please wait until Mrs. Vale begins."

The room fell silent.

Eleanor stood.

For a moment, she rested one hand on the back of her chair, studying the familiar faces around the table.

Some had worked with her for decades.

Others represented newer investors.

All of them trusted her judgment.

"I appreciate everyone coming on such short notice."

No one spoke.

"There are two matters before this board."

"The first concerns financial misconduct."

Several directors exchanged puzzled glances.

Eleanor nodded toward Richard.

The attorney opened the first folder.

Inside were bank transfers, corporate filings, loan documents, and internal approvals bearing Julian's signature.

Richard spoke calmly.

"Over the past eighteen months, approximately four million dollars was transferred from Vale Estate accounts into a privately owned company controlled by Mr. Julian Vale."

A murmur spread through the room.

"Those transfers were not approved by this board."

Another page turned.

"Nor were they disclosed during quarterly financial reviews."

One director frowned.

"Are you saying estate funds were misappropriated?"

Richard answered carefully.

"We are saying the documentation raises serious legal concerns."

Silence settled over the room.

Then Eleanor spoke again.

"Effective immediately, I am requesting a unanimous vote to suspend Julian Vale from all financial authority pending an independent forensic audit."

No one objected.

The vote was unanimous.

Eight hands rose without hesitation.

The decision took less than thirty seconds.

The consequences would last for years.

As the meeting ended, Margaret quietly entered.

She leaned close to Eleanor.

"Mrs. Vale..."

"What is it?"

"Julian is here."

The room became still again.

Richard looked toward the door.

"He wasn't invited."

"I know."

Eleanor nodded once.

"Show him in."

Seconds later, Julian walked into the boardroom.

He wore a tailored navy suit and the same confident smile he used before negotiating contracts.

He stopped when he noticed every director still seated.

His smile faded slightly.

"What's going on?"

No one answered.

His eyes found the folders.

Then Richard.

Then Eleanor.

Understanding dawned.

"You held a board meeting without me."

"Yes."

"You can't."

"I just did."

Julian laughed once.

"This is unbelievable."

He looked around the table.

"You actually listened to her?"

Director Samuel Brooks folded his hands.

"We listened to evidence."

Julian turned back toward Eleanor.

"You've been digging through private records."

"Estate records."

"You had no right."

"I had every right."

His voice sharpened.

"I'm your son."

"And this is my company."

The words landed like stone.

For the first time in his life, Julian seemed genuinely uncertain.

Richard slid a document across the table.

"This is the board's resolution."

Julian glanced at it.

His face drained of color.

Suspended.

Financial authority revoked.

Corporate access terminated.

Immediate audit.

"No."

His voice was barely audible.

"You can't do this."

Eleanor met his eyes.

"It's already done."

Julian's composure finally cracked.

He slammed both hands against the polished table.

"You've chosen her over your own blood!"

The echo filled the room.

No one moved.

Eleanor remained seated.

"I chose accountability."

"You don't know what she's told you."

"I know what medical records tell me."

His breathing quickened.

"She lies."

"So do financial statements?"

Richard quietly placed another document beside the first.

Bank transfers.

Loan agreements.

Private accounts.

Julian stared at them.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered,

"You've been spying on me."

"No."

Eleanor's voice remained calm.

"You left a trail."

Julian gathered the papers with shaking hands.

"This isn't over."

He looked around the room.

"Every one of you will regret this."

No one answered.

He stormed toward the door.

Just before reaching it, he stopped.

Without turning around, he said quietly,

"You have no idea what you've started."

The door slammed behind him.

Outside...

Julian climbed into his car and gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white.

His phone vibrated.

One new message.

PAYMENT DEADLINE EXPIRED.

Another appeared seconds later.

ANSWER YOUR PHONE.

Then another.

WE'RE COMING TO COLLECT.

His heartbeat thundered in his ears.

For months, he had believed he could borrow just enough to recover his losses.

One investment.

One lucky break.

One miracle.

Instead, everything had collapsed.

His money.

His marriage.

His mother's trust.

And now...

The people who had loaned him millions wanted repayment.

They were not known for accepting excuses.

Julian started the engine.

He had only one option left.

He needed money.

Fast.

And there was only one asset valuable enough to save him.

May you like

Vale Estate.

Even if he had to destroy it to get what he wanted.
