Chapter 4 – Fifteen Minutes Later

Exactly fourteen minutes later, a black SUV rolled slowly into the parking lot.
Then another.
And another.
Three vehicles stopped beside the pavilion.
The music continued.
Children kept laughing.
No one noticed.
Until four men in business suits stepped out.
Behind them came a silver-haired man in his early sixties wearing jeans, a navy blazer, and work boots that looked too practical for someone clearly accustomed to giving orders.
Patricia immediately hurried toward him.
"Mr. Carter."
He nodded once.
"Where's Jessica?"
Jessica stepped forward.
"Here."
His expression softened.
"I'm sorry."
Vanessa frowned.
"Who is this?"
The older man ignored her completely.
Instead, he looked toward Emma sitting alone beneath the oak tree.
"Is that your little girl?"
Jessica nodded.
Without hesitation, he walked straight to Emma.
He crouched until they were eye level.
"Princess."
Emma looked up uncertainly.
"I'm David."
She wiped her eyes.
"Hi."
"I heard today was supposed to be your birthday."
She nodded again.
"It was."
David smiled gently.
"I think we should fix that."
Only then did he stand and turn toward the pavilion.
His expression changed instantly.
Professional.
Cold.
"Who is in charge here?"
Vanessa confidently stepped forward.
"I am."
David looked at Patricia.
"Did she sign the contract?"
"No."
"Did she pay?"
"No."
He turned toward Vanessa.
"So you're not the client."
She folded her arms.
"My sister doesn't mind."
Jessica said nothing.
David finally addressed everyone gathered around the tables.
"My name is David Carter."
"I own Carter Premier Events."
Silence spread through the pavilion.
"I also own every decoration, every rental item, every entertainment contract, every chair, every table, every sound system, and every piece of equipment currently sitting in this pavilion."
The silence became complete.
Vanessa blinked.
"What?"
David continued calmly.
"The only person authorized to use any of it today..."
He gestured toward Jessica.
"...is the woman who paid five thousand dollars."
He pulled a folder from his assistant.
"Since the contracted client has not received the event she purchased..."
He closed the folder.
"...this event is now officially suspended."
He looked toward his staff.
"Begin recovery."
Within seconds, workers moved.
The DJ turned off the music.
The balloon artists packed their supplies.
The face painters cleaned their stations.
Servers stopped carrying food.
Rental crews began removing decorations.
Parents looked around in confusion.
Children started asking questions.
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"You can't do this!"
May you like
David looked at her.
"I already am."
