CHAPTER 2: THE LETTER HER FATHER LEFT BEHIND

The church remained silent as Emily reached her mother.
She gently took the old gold ring and the folded note from her trembling hands.
Daniel called after her.
"Emily, please. Don't do this."
But she no longer looked at him.
Carefully, she unfolded the letter.
The paper was yellowed with age.
Her father's familiar handwriting blurred through her tears.
My dearest Emily,
If you're reading this, then I couldn't be there to walk you down the aisle.
That will always be my greatest regret.
But before you marry anyone, remember one thing:
A man who truly loves you will never make you choose between love and family.
He will honor the people who stood beside you before he arrived.
Especially your mother.
She sacrificed more for you than anyone will ever know.
If the man beside you cannot respect her, he does not deserve you.
Love,
Dad
Emily's hands shook.
Every word felt as if her father were speaking directly to her.
For years, her mother had worked two jobs.
She had sold jewelry to pay hospital bills.
She had skipped meals so Emily could eat.
And today, on the most important day of her life, she had been humiliated simply because she looked poor.
Emily lifted her head.
Her eyes met Daniel's.
"Did you know this was happening?"
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation was answer enough.
The tears disappeared from Emily's face.
In their place came clarity.
"I loved you," she said quietly.
"But I can't marry a man who stays silent while my mother is treated like this."
Victoria Harrison scoffed.
"You are throwing away your future."
Emily smiled sadly.
"No. I'm saving it."
Then she turned toward the guests.
"The wedding is over."
Gasps filled the church.

And with her mother beside her, Emily walked out.
For the first time that day, she felt free.
