Chapter 2: One Last Chance

Forty-eight hours later...
The Whitmore mansion no longer belonged to the Whitmores.
Moving trucks lined the driveway.
Court officers carried expensive paintings and furniture outside.
Julian stood in the empty living room wearing the same suit from the wedding.
His mother sat silently, unable to speak.
The front door opened.
Clara walked in.
Not as a bride.
But as the new owner.
Julian rushed toward her.
"Please."
She stopped.
"I loved you."
"I know."
"I made a mistake."
"No."
She looked around the empty mansion.
"You made thousands of choices."
"You laughed when your mother pushed me."
"You planned to steal everything I owned."
"You discussed killing me."
She paused.
"Those weren't mistakes."
"They were decisions."
Julian dropped to his knees.
"I'll spend the rest of my life making it right."
Clara almost smiled.
"You finally understand."
Hope flashed across his face.
Then she continued.
"You'll have the rest of your life."
"In prison."
Police officers entered through the front door.
The lead detective unfolded an arrest warrant.
"Julian Whitmore..."
"You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit fraud, attempted extortion, criminal intimidation, and conspiracy to commit attempted murder."
The officers turned toward his mother.
"And Margaret Whitmore..."
She screamed as handcuffs closed around her wrists.
Julian looked desperately at Clara.
"You planned all of this..."
Clara nodded.
"The moment I heard your mother discussing my 'accident' six months ago."
"I didn't fake being disabled."
She slowly rolled the empty wheelchair toward him.
"I built a test."
"And every single one of you failed."
May you like
As the police led them away, neither Julian nor his mother looked back.
They already knew there was nothing left to save.
