Chapter 3: The Recording

Martin Hale, the Whitmore family attorney, entered the room with two security guards behind him.
Vanessa stared at him like he was a ghost.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Martin, what is going on?”
Martin placed the laptop on a side table.
“Your grandmother asked me to review security footage after several private family documents went missing.”
Vanessa’s face drained.
Anna looked confused.
“What documents?”
Martin did not answer immediately.
He opened the laptop.
The room watched as footage appeared on the screen.
The angle showed Richard Whitmore’s old study.
Two nights earlier.
Vanessa entered alone.
She searched the desk.
Opened drawers.
Removed a sealed envelope.
Then she took out her phone and made a call.
The audio was clear.
Vanessa’s recorded voice filled the room.
“I found the proof. The maid really is the daughter. If Daniel finds out before the wedding, everything changes.”
A male voice answered through the phone.
“Then make sure she leaves.”
Vanessa whispered, “I’m trying. But the little girl keeps going near Eleanor.”
The man replied, “Get rid of the box. No box, no proof.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
Vanessa looked trapped.
“Daniel,” she said quickly, “I can explain.”
But Martin clicked again.
A second recording played.
This one came from the hallway outside the servants’ quarters.
Vanessa’s voice was colder there.
“You and your daughter will be gone before my wedding, Anna. I don’t care what blood you carry. Families are built by power, not birth certificates.”
Anna stood completely still.
Daniel looked at Vanessa as though he no longer recognized her.
“You threatened my sister?”
Vanessa flinched at the word.
Sister.
That one word destroyed her.
She turned desperate.
“I did this for us.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“There is no us.”
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“You think she cares about you? She came for the inheritance!”
Anna finally stepped forward.
“No,” she said quietly. “I came because my daughter deserved to know where she came from.”
Lily reached for her mother’s hand.
Anna held it tightly.
Vanessa’s breathing became uneven.
She looked around at the guests, the cameras, the wealthy faces that had admired her only minutes ago.
Now they watched her like a scandal.
Eleanor lifted her chin.
“Vanessa Carrington, this engagement is over.”
Daniel removed the ring from Vanessa’s finger himself.
The diamond slipped free.
Vanessa stared at her bare hand in disbelief.
Then Martin delivered the final blow.
“And because you attempted to destroy legal trust documents, the police are already on their way.”
May you like
Sirens sounded faintly outside the mansion gates.
For the first time that night, Vanessa had nothing to say.
