Chapter 6 The Man in the Photograph

The ballroom seemed to shrink.

Every eye settled on the faded photograph in Ethan's hands.

Emma leaned closer.

She studied the image for several long seconds.

She remembered the hospital.

She remembered the rain.

She remembered leaving through the front entrance after another ultrasound appointment.

But the man...

She had never noticed him.

"I don't know who he is," she whispered.

Victor nodded once.

"I know."

Ethan looked sharply at his father.

"Then why was he following her?"

Victor hesitated.

It was the first time that evening he genuinely struggled to find the right words.

"I hired him."

The room erupted with shocked murmurs.

Margaret's face hardened.

"You hired someone to follow a pregnant woman?"

Victor closed his eyes briefly.

"I hired a private security contractor."

"To protect her?" Ethan asked.

Victor looked away.

"To monitor her."

Emma felt her stomach tighten.

"You had me watched."

"For several months."

"You knew where I lived?"

"Yes."

"You knew I was carrying quadruplets?"

Victor nodded.

"The investigator confirmed it after your second specialist appointment."

Emma's knees weakened.

For five years, she had believed she had vanished.

She hadn't.

Someone had been watching.

The thought made her skin crawl.

Ethan's voice dropped to a dangerous calm.

"You knew."

Victor looked at him.

"You knew I had four children."

"Yes."

"And you let me believe Emma had abandoned me."

Victor didn't answer.

"You watched my children grow up..."

His breathing became uneven.

"...and you never told me they existed."

Silence.

That silence was all the answer anyone needed.

Noah quietly tugged on Emma's hand.

"Mama?"

She knelt beside him immediately.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Were we in danger?"

Emma looked at the innocent faces surrounding her.

She wanted to lie.

To protect them.

But they had already lived through enough secrets.

"I don't know."

Noah nodded thoughtfully.

"Okay."

His calmness surprised everyone.

Children often accepted uncertainty better than adults.

Margaret slowly approached Victor.

"I don't recognize you anymore."

Victor laughed bitterly.

"I barely recognize myself."

She stared at him.

"Then tell them why."

He didn't answer.

"You've hidden behind business long enough."

Victor looked toward the windows overlooking Seattle.

Rain had begun falling again.

Just like five years earlier.

"It started before Emma."

Everyone listened.

"Years before."

Fifteen Years Earlier

Harrison Global had been smaller.

Successful.

But vulnerable.

A rival corporation attempted a hostile takeover.

They couldn't buy the company.

So they targeted Victor's family instead.

His wife was followed for weeks.

His son received anonymous threats.

Their home was photographed.

Nothing illegal.

Nothing violent.

Just enough to create fear.

Victor eventually defeated the takeover.

But the experience changed him forever.

He became obsessed with control.

With eliminating every possible risk before it could become reality.

Back in the ballroom...

"When Ethan fell in love with Emma..."

Victor's voice was quieter now.

"I panicked."

Emma frowned.

"Because I wasn't wealthy?"

"No."

She looked surprised.

"I investigated you."

"You what?"

"I investigated everyone close to my family."

Emma folded her arms.

"And?"

Victor sighed.

"You were honest."

She blinked.

"You worked two jobs while finishing graduate school."

"You volunteered at a children's hospital."

"You had no debts."

"No criminal record."

"No hidden relationships."

Margaret frowned.

"Then why?"

Victor answered without looking at anyone.

"Because you had something no amount of money could predict."

Emma whispered,

"What?"

"Ethan loved you more than he needed me."

The room fell silent.

Victor continued.

"I wasn't afraid you'd hurt him."

He looked at Ethan.

"I was afraid I'd lose him."

Ethan stared at his father.

"All this..."

He gestured toward Emma.

Toward the children.

Toward the ruined wedding.

"...because you couldn't accept your son growing up?"

Victor's shoulders slumped.

"It sounds pathetic when you say it."

"It is pathetic."

For once...

Victor didn't argue.

Emma remained silent.

She had imagined Victor as a monster for years.

Now she saw something different.

A deeply flawed man whose fear had destroyed everything he had tried to protect.

It didn't excuse him.

But it explained him.

Sophie wandered over to Margaret.

"Are you my great-grandma?"

Margaret smiled warmly.

"I am."

"Do you bake cookies?"

Several guests laughed.

Margaret chuckled.

"I make excellent cookies."

Sophie nodded with satisfaction.

"Good."

"Why?"

"Because our family is getting bigger."

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

"I think it is."

The attorney quietly interrupted.

"Mr. Harrison..."

Victor turned.

"There is one more matter."

"What now?"

"The board of directors has requested an emergency meeting."

"When?"

"In one hour."

Victor nodded.

"I'll be there."

The attorney hesitated.

"I'm afraid..."

He glanced toward Ethan.

"...they've also requested Mr. Ethan Harrison's attendance."

Ethan frowned.

"For what purpose?"

The attorney spoke carefully.

"They'll be voting on whether Mr. Victor Harrison should remain Chairman and CEO."

The whispers returned instantly.

This was unprecedented.

Victor had founded Harrison Global.

No one had ever challenged his leadership.

Until today.

Victor wasn't surprised.

"I expected this."

Ethan looked at him.

"You knew?"

"The board protects the company."

He managed a tired smile.

"They're doing exactly what I taught them."

Emma stepped closer.

"You don't have to go."

Victor looked at her.

"I do."

"Why?"

"Because actions have consequences."

Margaret smiled faintly.

"Now you're finally learning."

Before anyone could say another word, Noah pointed toward the ballroom entrance.

"Who's that?"

Everyone turned.

A man in his late fifties stood quietly near the doors.

Gray suit.

Silver hair.

Kind eyes.

He looked directly at Emma.

Recognition flashed across her face.

"Oh my God..."

Ethan frowned.

"You know him?"

Emma nodded slowly.

"He's..."

Her voice caught.

"...the doctor."

"The specialist who delivered the quadruplets."

The doctor smiled warmly.

"I've been looking for your family."

Emma blinked.

"Why?"

He held up a thick medical file.

"Because there was something unusual about your pregnancy."

Victor frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The doctor took a slow breath.

"I didn't want to discuss it over the phone."

Emma's heartbeat quickened.

"Please..."

"What is it?"

The doctor looked at the four children laughing near the wedding cake.

Then back at Emma.

"There is something about those four children..."

May you like

He paused.

"...that none of us understood five years ago."
