CHAPTER 2 — The Name She Buried

The restaurant no longer felt like a fundraiser.
It felt like a courtroom where no one had been told a trial was happening.
Eleanor Whitmore stood frozen, her trembling hands still holding the torn photograph of her daughter.
Grace.
Her missing daughter.
The boy stepped back slightly, confused by the sudden silence.
“My mom said you might not believe me…” he whispered.
Eleanor forced herself to breathe.
“What… is your name?” she asked, voice breaking.
The boy hesitated.
“Ethan.”
She nodded slowly, as if trying to hold herself together.
“And your mother… Grace… where is she now?”
Ethan lowered his eyes.
“She said she can’t come back yet.”
A painful silence spread through the room.
Eleanor took a step forward.
“Why?”
Ethan’s small voice trembled.
“Because the people who hurt her… said they would hurt me too if she returned.”
That sentence shattered something inside her.
Eleanor’s perfect posture broke.
For the first time in decades, the woman who controlled boardrooms and political deals looked helpless.
“Who?” she whispered. “Who did this to her?”
But before Ethan could answer—
the restaurant doors opened again.

A cold draft entered the room.
And a man in a tailored suit stepped inside.
