Chapter 2: The Woman Noah Trusted

The investigation began before sunrise.

By noon, psychologists, child welfare specialists, and detectives filled the Mercer estate.

Vanessa insisted it was all a misunderstanding.

"He's autistic."

"He's anxious."

"He invents stories."

She had an explanation for everything.

Until Noah was interviewed without her.

Marina never entered the room.

She simply sat outside the door where Noah could see her through the glass.

Every few minutes, he glanced toward her.

Every time he did...

He found the courage to speak.

The investigators noticed.

So did Logan.

For hours, Noah described things no six-year-old should have known.

The locked closet.

The punishments.

The nights he wasn't allowed dinner.

The whispers telling him that if he ever spoke, Daddy would stop loving him.

Every sentence broke Logan a little more.

The investigators searched the house.

Hidden cameras.

A locked storage room.

Medication never prescribed to Noah.

Old bruises documented in photographs Marina had secretly taken after finding the frightened boy hiding in the laundry room days earlier.

She had planned to report everything.

The gala had happened first.

Vanessa was arrested before sunset.

As officers led her away, she screamed at Marina.

"You turned him against me!"

Marina simply shook her head.

"No."

"He finally found his voice."

That evening, the mansion felt strangely quiet.

Noah sat beside Marina in the garden.

They watched fireflies dance through the darkness.

Finally he spoke.

"I knew... you would come."

Marina smiled gently.

"I've only worked here twelve days."

He nodded.

"I dreamed... before."

She frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"You smell... like my blanket."

"My mommy's blanket."

The words made no sense.

May you like

At least...

Not yet.
