Chapter 2: The Widow Who Planned Too Carefully

Chapter 2: The Widow Who Planned Too Carefully

Police arrived before the ambulance doors had even closed.

By midnight, the Vale mansion was surrounded by reporters, flashing cameras, and detectives.

Richard was alive, but barely.

Doctors said he had been drugged with a powerful sedative—enough to slow his breathing and make him appear dead to anyone who didn’t look closely.

The death certificate had been signed too quickly.

The funeral had been arranged too fast.

And Maria had insisted on a sealed coffin.

Everything pointed to her.

But Maria did not run.

She sat in the mansion’s grand library in her black mourning dress, legs crossed, pearl earrings shining, as if she were waiting for tea instead of handcuffs.

Detective Harris placed a file in front of her.

“You wanted the inheritance.”

Maria laughed softly.

“You think this was about money?”

Ethan stood near the fireplace, fists clenched.

“Then what was it about?”

Maria looked at him with cold amusement.

“Ask your father what he did twenty-seven years ago.”

The room went silent.

Richard, still weak and wrapped in a hospital blanket, lowered his eyes.

Ethan turned slowly.

“Dad?”

Richard didn’t answer.

Maria leaned forward.

“He built an empire on a lie. He destroyed families. He buried secrets. Tonight, I simply gave him the burial he deserved.”

Ethan wanted to hate her.

But for the first time, doubt entered the room.

Then the detective’s phone rang.

He listened for five seconds.

His expression changed.

“We found something in the funeral home security footage.”

Maria’s smile disappeared.

Harris looked at Ethan.

“Your stepmother wasn’t the only one near that coffin.”
