CHAPTER 1 The Girl Who Was Afraid of Her Own Home

Richard Hale had built an empire from nothing.

At forty-two years old, he was the founder of one of the largest technology companies in the country. His name appeared on magazine covers, business rankings, and charity events.

People saw him as a powerful billionaire.

A man who could buy anything.

Anything except the one thing he wanted most.

More time with his daughter.

Sophie Hale was seven years old.

After losing her mother three years earlier, Richard had thrown himself into work, believing that providing a beautiful home and financial security would protect his little girl from pain.

He never imagined that the greatest danger would be waiting inside that home.

The day everything changed started like any other.

Richard arrived at the mansion earlier than expected.

He had canceled an important meeting because he wanted to surprise Sophie.

He carried a small gift bag in his hand.

A new art set.

Sophie loved drawing.

Or at least, she used to.

As Richard walked through the massive house, he noticed something strange.

The mansion was silent.

Too silent.

Usually, Sophie would run toward him.

Usually, she would shout:

"Daddy!"

Usually, she would wrap her arms around his waist and tell him about her day.

But this time...

Nothing.

"Sophie?" Richard called.

No answer.

He walked toward the kitchen.

Then he heard something.

A small movement.

A quiet sound.

Like someone trying not to be noticed.

Richard pushed open the pantry door.

And froze.

His daughter was sitting on the cold floor.

Her tiny hands were holding a bowl.

But it wasn't filled with food.

It was filled with dog food.

For several seconds, Richard couldn't understand what he was seeing.

His mind refused to accept it.

His daughter.

His little girl.

The child he loved more than anything.

Eating from a bowl meant for the family dog.

"Sophie..."

His voice broke.

The little girl immediately dropped the bowl.

Her eyes widened.

Not with surprise.

Not with embarrassment.

With fear.

That was the moment Richard felt something inside him collapse.

Because children were not supposed to look afraid when they saw their father.

"Daddy..."

Sophie whispered.

Richard slowly knelt down.

"Sweetheart... what are you doing?"

The little girl looked toward the kitchen door.

As if checking whether someone was watching.

Then she lowered her voice.

"I was hungry."

Richard felt his chest tighten.

"When did you last eat?"

Sophie hesitated.

Her fingers gripped the edge of her sweater.

"Yesterday morning."

The words hit him harder than any business failure ever had.

"Yesterday morning?"

She nodded.

"Miss Vanessa said I lost dinner and breakfast because I spilled water."

Richard's expression changed.

Vanessa.

His fiancée.

The woman who had promised him she would love Sophie like her own child.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Sophie looked terrified.

Then she whispered the words that would haunt him forever.

"Please don't tell her."

Richard stared at his daughter.

"Why?"

Sophie swallowed.

"Because she'll know I told."

A cold feeling moved through him.

This wasn't about one missed meal.

This was fear.

Deep.

Constant.

Hidden.

And Richard suddenly realized something terrifying.

His daughter wasn't afraid of punishment.

She was afraid of what would happen after.

He pulled Sophie into his arms.

She didn't hug him back immediately.

She froze.

Like she wasn't used to being comforted.

That hurt him more than anything.

"My baby..." Richard whispered.

"I'm here."

But Sophie quietly asked:

"Are you mad at me?"

Richard closed his eyes.

A billionaire who had negotiated billion-dollar deals.

A man who had faced angry investors and ruthless competitors.

Yet one small question from his daughter nearly broke him.

"No, Sophie."

He held her tighter.

"I'm mad that you thought I would be."

At that exact moment...

The kitchen door opened.

Vanessa walked inside.

Perfect hair.

Designer clothes.

A calm smile.

She looked at Sophie in Richard's arms.

Then at the bowl on the floor.

And instead of looking shocked...

She sighed.

"Richard, you're overreacting."

The room went silent.

Richard slowly turned toward her.

"What did you say?"

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"I'm teaching her discipline."

Richard stared at the woman standing in front of him.

The woman he trusted.

The woman who lived in his home.

The woman who had been alone with his daughter every day.

"You let my daughter eat dog food."

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"She was being dramatic."

Richard felt his hands shake.

But his voice remained calm.

"What exactly did you do?"

Vanessa smiled slightly.

"I corrected bad behavior."

Behind him, Sophie grabbed his sleeve.

A tiny movement.

A silent request.

Don't leave me.

And Richard finally understood.

His daughter had been trying to survive.

Inside his own house.

Under his own roof.

That night, Richard made a decision.

One that would destroy the life he thought he had built.

He would uncover every secret.

May you like

No matter who he had to confront.

Even if it meant destroying the woman he planned to marry.
