Chapter 2: Cracks in the Porcelain

The shattered crystal lay scattered across the marble like frozen ice.
No one bent to clean it.
No one dared move.
Julian stared at the security monitor as if willing the image to disappear.
It didn't.
The grainy footage kept replaying.
Again.
And again.
His bandaged hand slipping inside the jacket.
The unmistakable glimmer of diamonds.
His own face.
His own crime.
Victoria's lips parted.
"No..."
She looked from the monitor to her son.
Back again.
A mother searching desperately for another explanation.
"There has to be some mistake."
Julian swallowed hard.
"Mom—"
"This footage isn't clear enough."
"It could be anyone."
Richard didn't even blink.
"Anyone?"
His voice remained calm.
"The man on the screen is wearing the exact sweater you're wearing."
Silence.
"The same watch."
Silence.
"The same bandaged hand."
Julian's breathing quickened.
Victoria stepped toward him.
"Tell your father."
"Tell him why you went into my dressing room."
Julian rubbed a trembling hand over his face.
For several long seconds...
He said nothing.
Then...
Something inside him broke.
"I didn't have a choice!"
His voice exploded through the room.
Victoria flinched.
Richard remained perfectly still.
"I owed them money."
Julian laughed bitterly.
"You think this family name solves everything?"
"It doesn't."
"I lost millions."
"The investments collapsed."
"The casinos."
"The offshore accounts."
"It kept getting worse."
He grabbed both sides of his head.
"They gave me until Friday."
"If I didn't pay..."
He slowly lifted the bandaged hand.
"...this wouldn't have been the only thing they'd break."
Victoria staggered backward.
"You gambled?"
Julian laughed again.
Not happily.
Like a man already drowning.
"For years."
Richard finally spoke.
"So you stole from your own mother."
"I was going to put it back."
"When?"
"After I sold it."
Richard closed his eyes.
The lie insulted both of them.
Then came the sentence neither parent expected.
"I only blamed Clara because it was easy."
The words echoed through the room.
Victoria stared at him.
"What did you say?"
Julian looked directly at his father.
"A maid."
"A single mother."
"Who would believe her over us?"
His expression twisted into something ugly.
"We're Sterlings."
"People always believe us."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"You watched security drag her child into the rain."
Julian said nothing.
"You watched them search her like a criminal."
Still nothing.
"You watched Lily cry."
Julian looked away.
Richard stepped closer.
"So answer me."
His voice dropped almost to a whisper.
"When did you become this man?"
Julian couldn't.
Because he didn't know.
Perhaps it had happened slowly.
One excuse at a time.
One lie after another.
Until the difference between protecting himself and destroying someone else's life no longer mattered.
Victoria collapsed onto the sofa.
"My God..."
"I called every agency."
"I ruined her."
Richard looked at his wife.
"No."
"We did."
He reached for his phone.
Julian's eyes widened.
"What are you doing?"
"What should have been done twenty minutes ago."
"Dad..."
"You can't."
Richard dialed anyway.
The call connected almost immediately.
"Chief Donovan?"
A pause.
"Yes."
"This is Richard Sterling."
"I need to report a theft."
Julian stepped forward.
"Dad, please."
Richard didn't acknowledge him.
"The suspect is my son."
Victoria gasped.
Julian went completely pale.
Richard continued calmly.
"Yes."
"I have surveillance footage."
"And yes..."
His eyes never left Julian's.
"I'm prepared to provide a full statement."
The call ended.
The silence afterward felt endless.
Julian stared at his father in disbelief.
"You'd actually send me to prison?"
Richard's answer came without hesitation.
"No."
"You sent yourself."
Then he turned toward the rain-covered windows.
Somewhere beyond that storm...
A frightened woman was trying to convince her little girl that justice still existed.
Richard wasn't sure she believed it anymore.
May you like
But before this night ended...
He intended to prove her wrong.
