Chapter 17 - THE FOUNDER’S FINAL MEETING
Henry Sterling’s health declined during Nathan’s twenty-third year.
He entered the hospital after a stroke.
His speech became slow.
His mind remained clear.
Nathan sat beside him.
The old man looked toward the window.
“I built too much around our name.”
“You built jobs.”
“I built a throne too.”
“You stepped away.”
“After people were harmed.”
Nathan did not argue.
Henry asked for one final board meeting.
It took place inside his hospital room through video.
He transferred his remaining voting shares into the employee and customer trusts.
The Sterling family retained an economic interest.
It no longer held permanent control.
Several relatives objected.
Henry ended the call.
Then he looked at Nathan.
“Did I go too far?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“No.”
Henry smiled.
“Good answer.”
He died two weeks later.
His funeral resembled Daniel’s.
Mechanics sat beside executives.
Customers attended.
Former employees came.
Grant stood near the back.
No special front row was reserved for family.
Nathan sat beside Maya and Rosa.
The people who protected the truth were family too.
After the funeral, Nathan opened Henry’s final letter.
The first line read:
A company name is rented from the future.
Return it cleaner than you received it.
Nathan placed the letter beside Daniel’s notebook inside the company archive.
One taught honesty.
The other taught responsibility.
