Chapter 17 - THE SHARES LEAH DID NOT KEEP
Leah became the legal owner of thirty percent of the Mercer voting trust.
She refused a personal payout.
Instead, she created three separate structures.
Ten percent went into an employee ownership trust for hotel workers.
Ten percent supported the Claire Moreno Foundation for medical care, housing assistance, and legal protection for service employees.
The remaining ten percent stayed in Leah’s name under independent management.
She kept enough authority to prevent the Mercer family from reversing the reforms.
Julian questioned the decision.
“You could keep all of it.”
“I could.”
“It belongs to you.”
“It belonged to my mother first.”
“She spent her life working beside people the Mercers treated as invisible.”
“I think she would want them protected.”
The Halcyon board objected to employee ownership.
Leah reminded them that servers, cleaners, cooks, maintenance workers, and event crews kept the hotels operating while executives fought over inheritance.
The proposal passed after Julian transferred part of his own shares into the employee trust.
He stepped down as chief executive.
A professional board selected his replacement.
For the first time in a century, no Mercer controlled the hotel group alone.
Leah kept running her floral studio.
She accepted no automatic Mercer contracts.
She competed through ordinary bids.
The Halcyon hired her again only after an independent panel selected her design.
On the first day of installation, hotel workers entered through the main lobby.
The separate service entrance remained available for deliveries.
It was no longer mandatory for people.
Mateo completed his journalism degree.
His investigation into the Mercer medical records won a national award.
He refused the Halcyon’s offer to pay his tuition.
He accepted an employee scholarship created through an open application process.
Leah teased him about the difference.
He answered,
“One is a favor.”
