Chapter 10 - The Real Plan

Naomi arranged for the locks on my house to be changed under police supervision.

I went with her.

Walking inside felt different.

The house had belonged to my father before it became mine.

Connor had moved in after our wedding.

For twelve years, I had thought of it as ours.

Now I looked at every room and wondered where they had stood while planning to take it from me.

Investigators searched Connor’s office.

Behind a false panel in a filing cabinet, they found a second phone.

Most of the messages were deleted.

Some were recoverable.

One conversation between Connor and Elaine began eleven months earlier.

CONNOR: She still won’t sell the patent rights.

ELAINE: Then stop asking.

CONNOR: Investors won’t approve the Orion structure.

ELAINE: They won’t need to.

CONNOR: Claire controls the trust.

ELAINE: Only while she is capable.

My stomach turned.

The next message came four days later.

CONNOR: Mercer may not cooperate.

ELAINE: Allison will.

CONNOR: She won’t lie knowingly.

ELAINE: Then don’t let her know.

Everything had been planned.

Every person manipulated.

Even Allison.

Then came the message that changed the entire story.

CONNOR: What about Brenda?

ELAINE: She thinks this is about money.

CONNOR: Isn’t it?

ELAINE: No.

I read that line again.

No.

Naomi scrolled.

CONNOR: Then what is it about?

Elaine’s answer came seven minutes later.

ELAINE: Your father.

I stared at Naomi.

Connor’s father, Thomas Ward, had died seventeen years earlier.

Before I met Connor.

The official story was simple.

A heart attack.

Elaine rarely talked about him.

Connor claimed his father had left the family with debts.

But my father had known Thomas Ward.

I suddenly remembered something I had not thought about in years.

At my wedding, my father became unusually quiet when Elaine introduced herself.

Later, I asked if they had met before.

He said only once.

Business.

Then he changed the subject.

Naomi asked about my father’s old company.

Before Apex, he had owned a technology patent firm called Merritt Innovations.

I used my maiden name professionally for years.

Claire Merritt.

After marrying Connor, I became Claire Ward legally.

“What happened between Thomas Ward and your father?”

“I don’t know.”

My father never discussed it.

Naomi contacted the attorney who handled my father’s estate.

Samuel Price was eighty-two and retired.

When I mentioned Thomas Ward, he became silent.

“Claire, where are you?”

“At my house.”

“Are you alone?”

“No.”

“Good.”

My throat tightened.

“Samuel, what happened?”

He sighed.

“Your father made me promise not to tell you unless the trust was challenged by a Ward.”

The room seemed to narrow around me.

“It has been.”

Samuel told me to retrieve a sealed box from my father’s private safe.

I had seen the box many times.

It was marked with a date from twenty-one years earlier.

I had never opened it.

Inside were contracts.

Court documents.

Letters.

And an old photograph showing my father beside Thomas Ward.

They were not strangers.

They had been business partners.

Thomas had helped develop the original software architecture that eventually became Apex’s most valuable patent family.

Then he was accused of stealing company funds.

My father bought him out.

Thomas lost everything.

Three years later, he died.

I stared at the documents.

“So Elaine thinks my father destroyed her husband.”

Samuel’s voice came through the phone.

“That is what she has believed for twenty years.”

Naomi held up another document.

A confidential settlement agreement.

Thomas Ward had admitted diverting funds.

But one page was missing.

A page containing the name of the person who received the stolen money.

Samuel spoke quietly.

“Your father never believed Thomas acted alone.”

“Who did?”

Samuel hesitated.

“Elaine.”

The room went silent.

The entire scheme suddenly looked different.

Elaine was not avenging a husband my father had ruined.

She was trying to erase evidence of what she herself had done decades earlier.

And the missing page could prove it.
