Chapter 2 – The Poison That Never Touched the Wine

The chapel fell silent.

Dr. Evelyn Hayes slipped on a fresh pair of nitrile gloves before anyone spoke another word. Detective Ross Carter stepped beside her, his face tightening as she held the crystal wine glass beneath the fluorescent evidence lamp.

"The poison isn't in the wine," she said quietly.

Every eye turned toward her.

Ethan Morgan's expression hardened. "That's impossible. The toxicology report says my father died from cyanide."

"It does," Evelyn replied without looking up. "But the report never proved the poison came from the wine."

She gently swabbed the rim and placed the sample under a portable microscope. The gray residue formed a thin crescent exactly where a person's mouth would touch the glass.

"Whoever prepared this," she continued, "wanted Daniel to be the only one exposed."

Ross frowned.

"If the poison had been poured into the wine, it would have dissolved evenly. Rachel could have been poisoned if she tasted it. Anyone who sampled the bottle would have died. But only Daniel ingested the toxin."

Rachel stared at Evelyn, tears filling her eyes.

"I told you..." she whispered. "I never poisoned him."

Ross immediately ordered the bottle brought from evidence storage.

Minutes later, laboratory technicians opened the sealed container.

The wine itself tested completely clean.

No cyanide.

No toxins.

Nothing.

A wave of disbelief swept through the chapel.

Ethan took an unsteady step backward.

"Then... how did my father die?"

Evelyn carefully set the glass on the evidence table.

"Someone coated the rim after the wine was poured."

The realization struck everyone at once.

Rachel hadn't served poisoned wine.

Someone had turned Daniel's favorite glass into the murder weapon.
