By morning, Gerald Pike was in federal custody.
Vanessa remained jailed awaiting a formal hearing.
Derek Hale was stable after surgery.
Mrs. Howard returned home.
Daniel gave investigators seven years of financial records.
It should have felt like victory.
Then Howard Capital’s general counsel called.
Richard put the call on speaker.
“There has been an emergency ownership filing.”
Richard frowned.
“What filing?”
“Forty-eight percent of voting shares were transferred overnight.”
“To whom?”
“A holding company called Meridian North.”
Richard stared at Elena.
“That is impossible.”
The attorney continued.
“The transfer appears to originate from trusts created by your father.”
“Gerald?”
“We don’t know.”
Richard asked the question that mattered.
“Who controls Meridian North?”
A pause.
“We’re still determining beneficial ownership.”
Elena remembered Gerald’s final words.
Ask Richard who owns Howard Capital now.
The financial crimes had never only been about revenge.
Someone had been moving ownership while everyone focused on the family scandal.
Richard called Ruiz.
Within hours, federal investigators traced Meridian North through five shell companies.
The final owner surprised everyone.
Derek Hale.
Richard stared at the report.
“Gerald transferred the company to his father?”
Ruiz shook his head.
“The transfers started six years ago.”
Elena looked at Daniel.
“That was after you disappeared.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
He knew something.
Richard saw it.
“You knew.”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I knew Derek was trying to recover what Charles stole.”
“By taking the entire company?”
“Not the entire company.”
“Forty-eight percent is close enough.”
Daniel pulled a folder from his bag.
Inside was an agreement signed by Charles Howard.
The document stated that if forensic accounting proved Charles had stolen company assets from Derek Hale’s investment partnership, shares would be transferred back as restitution.
Richard read the valuation.
Nearly eighty-two million dollars.
Exactly what Daniel had mentioned.
Elena finally understood.
Derek had not stolen Howard Capital.
Charles had built part of Howard Capital using stolen money.
Legally, the ownership question was far more complicated than anyone realized.
Mrs. Howard sat quietly.
“What happens now?”
Richard looked at Elena.
For generations, the Howard family had fought to keep everything.
The house.
The company.

The money.
Every disaster had begun with someone terrified of losing control.
Richard folded the document.
“We stop fighting over what was never entirely ours.”
Daniel looked at him.
“That could cost you the company.”
Richard nodded.
“Then it costs me the company.”
Mrs. Howard stared at her younger son.
Richard continued.
“I want a complete independent audit.”
“Everything Dad stole gets returned.”
“No more shell companies.”
“No more hidden accounts.”
“No more secrets.”
Daniel looked toward Elena.
She gave a slight nod.
For the first time since entering the Howard family, she heard someone choose truth even when truth might make him poorer.
That afternoon, Richard released a public statement announcing the audit.
Howard Capital’s stock dropped immediately.
Board members panicked.
Journalists gathered outside the gates.
Richard did not change his mind.
Then Elena received another call.
Dr. Lane wanted her at the hospital.
A routine follow-up scan had shown something unexpected.
Richard’s face went pale.
“What?”
Elena gripped his hand.
Dr. Lane smiled.
“The baby is healthy.”
Richard exhaled.
“Then what happened?”
Dr. Lane turned the monitor.
“There appears to have been a second gestational sac that was hidden during the earlier scans.”
Elena stared at the screen.
Richard blinked.
Dr. Lane smiled wider.
“You’re expecting twins.”
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Elena began laughing.
Richard laughed too.
After everything the Howard family had done for inheritance, power, and bloodlines, life had delivered the one thing none of them could control.
