Chapter 2: The Wedding That Became a Trial

The ballroom remained frozen.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
The only sound came from the torn pieces of silk brushing against the polished marble floor as the air conditioning stirred them gently.
Andrew stared at the ownership contract.
"This... this can't be real."
The venue manager calmly handed him the first page.
"It has been verified by the city registry, sir."
Andrew's hands began to shake.
The signature at the bottom belonged to Clara.
Patricia stepped forward, refusing to believe what she was seeing.
"There must be a mistake. She's just a designer!"
The manager looked at her politely.
"Mrs. Whitlock, Miss Mason never claimed otherwise."
He paused.
"She is the founder and majority owner of Mason Holdings, the company that purchased this estate eighteen months ago."
Gasps echoed throughout the ballroom.
Several business executives sitting among the guests suddenly recognized the company name.
"Mason Holdings..."
"I've worked with them."
"They own hotels across Europe."
"And luxury event venues."
One investor whispered to his wife,
"Her company is worth several billion dollars."
Patricia's face lost all color.
Andrew slowly turned toward Clara.
"You... never told me."
Clara looked at him with quiet disappointment.
"You never asked."
"I loved you for who you were."
"I wanted to know whether you loved me without my last name."
Andrew remembered every conversation they had shared.
Every time he assumed she lived in a modest apartment.
Every time he insisted on paying for dinner.
Every time his mother insulted Clara's background.
Not once...
Not once had Clara defended herself by mentioning money.
Because she believed love should never require proof of wealth.
Patricia suddenly pointed at Clara.
"You tricked us!"
Clara finally met her eyes.
"No."
"You judged me."
"There is a difference."
The silence was louder than any argument.
Then Clara reached into her bouquet and quietly removed the engagement ring.
She placed it into Andrew's trembling hand.
"I can repair a dress."
"But I can't repair trust."

With those words, she walked away from the altar.
The wedding ended before a single vow had been spoken.
