Chapter 11 - THE LAST DINNER

Preston asked to meet Emily alone.

Raymond refused.

Emily agreed.

Not because she trusted Preston.

Because she wanted to look at the man she had married one last time without lawyers translating him.

They met inside a private dining room at the Saint Claire Hotel.

Security waited outside.

Emily sat across from Preston.

There were no flowers.

No food.

No wedding ring on her hand.

Preston noticed immediately.

“Where is it?”

Emily looked at him.

“My ring?”

He said nothing.

“In a drawer.”

His face tightened.

“Emily.”

“Explain.”

Preston rubbed both hands together.

“I made mistakes.”

“That is not an explanation.”

“I was under pressure.”

“So you stole.”

“Our company was collapsing.”

“So you stole from my mother.”

“I intended to repay everything.”

Emily almost smiled.

“You also intended to declare me mentally incompetent.”

Preston looked toward the door.

“That recording sounds worse than it was.”

“It sounds exactly like it was.”

“I was trying to protect our child.”

Emily stared at him.

“From me?”

“From instability.”

“Whose instability?”

Preston exhaled.

“Your uncle controls you.”

Emily’s expression remained calm.

“You planned to steal my voting rights.”

“Temporarily.”

“You paid my doctor.”

“I never paid him.”

“You offered him a consulting contract.”

Preston stopped.

Emily nodded.

“I read the messages.”

His face changed.

There it was.

The moment he understood how much she knew.

Emily leaned forward.

“What happened to you?”

Preston looked away.

“Nothing happened.”

“That’s worse.”

He laughed bitterly.

“You grew up with people telling you money didn’t matter because you always had it.”

“My mother taught public school.”

“Your mother had a billionaire brother.”

“She refused his money for most of her life.”

“And then left you everything.”

Emily shook her head.

“She left me responsibility.”

Preston leaned closer.

“You don’t understand what it is like to carry a family name that is failing.”

Emily stared at him.

“So you used mine.”

“I saved thousands of jobs.”

“You saved your image.”

His jaw tightened.

“Do you think your uncle is innocent?”

“This is not about Raymond.”

“It is always about Raymond.”

“No.”

Emily placed both hands on the table.

“This is about the moment Vanessa kicked me.”

Preston looked away.

“You watched.”

“She surprised me.”

“You watched.”

“I froze.”

Emily’s eyes filled but her voice did not change.

“You put your hand around her waist.”

Preston had no answer.

Emily continued.

“I could survive the affair.”

He looked back at her.

“I could survive the lies.”

Her voice became softer.

“I could even survive learning that you stole money.”

Preston swallowed.

“But when somebody raised a foot toward your unborn child, you chose the person who did it.”

His face broke.

“Emily.”

“That is the moment our marriage ended.”

Preston reached across the table.

She moved her hand away.

“I loved you.”

“I know.”

“No.”

She stood slowly.

“You loved being loved by me.”

She picked up her purse.

“That is not the same thing.”

Preston stood.

“What happens now?”

May you like

Emily looked at him one last time.

“Now you meet the woman you thought would never fight back.”
