Chapter 2 – The Truth Hidden Inside the Lockets

The ballroom remained frozen.

Not a single champagne glass clinked.
Not a single guest dared whisper.

Lily's words echoed beneath the crystal chandeliers.

"You're... my sister."

Vanessa's perfectly composed face crumbled.

She stared at the completed photograph inside the lockets.

Two little girls.

One wrapped in a pink blanket.

The other wearing a tiny knitted sweater.

Both sitting on the lap of the same smiling woman.

The date written on the back stopped her breathing.

May 18th. Twenty-three years ago.

"That's impossible," Vanessa whispered again.

"My parents died when I was three."

Lily slowly shook her head.

"No... someone wanted you to believe that."

An older woman suddenly gasped from the crowd.

Everyone turned.

It was Margaret—the family's retired housekeeper.

She had served the Ashcroft family for over thirty years.

Margaret looked at the photograph, then at the two women.

Her face turned completely white.

"Oh... dear God..."

Vanessa rushed toward her.

"You know something."

Margaret's hands trembled violently.

"I promised never to speak."

"Speak."

"It wasn't an accident..."

The ballroom grew deadly silent.

"Twenty-three years ago your mother gave birth to twin daughters."

Vanessa felt the floor disappear beneath her feet.

"Twins?"

Margaret nodded with tears in her eyes.

"Your father was drowning in debt. A powerful businessman offered him a fortune... if he surrendered one baby."

Lily couldn't breathe.

"No..."

"He told everyone one twin had died."

Vanessa stepped backward.

"My father..."

"...sold my sister."

Margaret closed her eyes.

"He regretted it every day after your mother passed away. Before he died, he divided that silver locket into two pieces, hoping one day his daughters would find each other."

The guests stood speechless.

The richest family in the city had hidden the darkest secret imaginable.

Lily looked at Vanessa.

"So you never knew."

Vanessa slowly collapsed into a nearby chair.

Everything she believed about her childhood had been a lie.

She hadn't pushed a stranger tonight.

She had humiliated her own sister.
