Chapter 1 – The Olive That Never Touched the Glass

The Crystal Room at the Hawthorne Grand Hotel was known for impossible luxury. Crystal chandeliers shimmered above politicians, CEOs, celebrities, and investors who believed nothing ugly could happen in a room this expensive.

Then a martini exploded across the marble floor.

The sharp sound of breaking glass silenced nearly two hundred guests.

Daniel Mercer stared at the shattered drink in disbelief.

"What the hell?"

Across from him stood Emily Carter, a twenty-five-year-old waitress whose hands trembled as she tried to steady her breathing.

"I'm sorry, sir..."

She wasn't sorry.

She had slapped the martini from his hand on purpose.

Before Daniel could speak again, another voice sliced through the ballroom.

"You stupid little thief!"

Victoria Mercer stormed forward, her diamond bracelet flashing beneath the lights. The elegant guests instinctively stepped aside as she grabbed the thick leather-bound dinner menu from a nearby table.

The first strike landed across Emily's shoulder.

The second slammed against her face.

The heavy menu corner split the skin above her eyebrow, sending blood running down her cheek.

"You ruined everything!" Victoria screamed.

Emily stumbled backward but never looked away from Daniel.

She wasn't watching his reaction.

She was watching the untouched olive lying beside the broken glass.

Exactly where she wanted it.

Daniel reached toward his wife.

"Victoria! Stop!"

Security hurried over, but Victoria wasn't finished.

"Do you have any idea how much this event cost?" she shouted. "She attacked my husband! She belongs in jail!"

Emily slowly wiped the blood from her face.

"No," she whispered.

"I just kept him alive."

The ballroom erupted into confused whispers.

Victoria laughed.

"Listen to her! She's making up stories because she's scared."

Emily looked directly at Daniel.

"Don't touch that olive."

Every muscle in his body froze.

The room suddenly felt ten degrees colder.
