Chapter 2 — The Footage No One Could Escape

The mansion remained frozen in stunned silence.
Only the sound of Elena's trembling breaths filled the room.
Nathan Whitmore knelt beside his wife, one hand supporting the back of her neck while the other rested protectively over the curve of her eight-months-pregnant belly.
"You're safe," he whispered.
For the first time in months, Elena wanted to believe those words.
Across the room, Veronica Hale still refused to surrender.
She forced out a nervous laugh.
"She's manipulating you, Nathan. She always does."
Nathan didn't even look at her.
Instead, he spoke to the head of security.
"Play the footage."
A sixty-inch television descended from the wall.
Every servant, every guest, every executive Nathan had invited for the charity gala stood motionless.
The recording began.
There was no sound at first.
Only Veronica walking through the marble hallway.
Then Elena appeared.
She was carrying a small box of baby clothes she had secretly bought that morning.
She smiled politely.
Veronica blocked her path.
The argument lasted less than thirty seconds.
Then the footage showed everything.
Veronica grabbed Elena's wrist.
She slapped the box from her hands.
Tiny newborn clothes scattered across the marble floor.
Pink socks.
A knitted blanket.
A stuffed rabbit.
Then came the moment no one could watch without flinching.
Veronica slowly lifted her gold stiletto...
...and deliberately pressed it down onto Elena's hand.
Not once.
Not by accident.
She leaned harder.
Smiling.
Several guests gasped aloud.
One elderly board member quietly removed his glasses.
A young housekeeper began crying.
Nathan's face became unreadable.
That frightened everyone far more than shouting ever could.
The video continued.
Elena never fought back.
She never touched Veronica.
She only begged.
"My baby..."
Those two words echoed through the speakers.
Then the recording ended.
Silence.
Nathan slowly turned toward Veronica.
"You lied."
She swallowed.
"I... I can explain."
"No."
His voice was almost gentle.
"You can leave."
Veronica blinked.
"What?"
"Leave this house."
She laughed nervously.
"You can't be serious."
Nathan reached into his jacket and removed a small velvet box.
Everyone assumed it contained jewelry.
Instead...
It held a security badge.
Veronica's name disappeared from the mansion's digital access system with one click.
"Every code."
"Every fingerprint."
"Every key."
"Deleted."
Her smile disappeared.
"Nathan..."
"You said this house belonged to you."
He looked around the enormous estate.
"It never did."
Security stepped forward.
For the first time in years...
Veronica realized she no longer had power over anyone.
She walked toward the door in complete humiliation.
But before leaving, she turned back with hatred burning in her eyes.
"This isn't over."
Nathan answered without hesitation.
"It is."
She slammed the front door behind her.
Nathan looked down at Elena.
"We're going to the hospital."
May you like
She nodded.
Then quietly fainted in his arms.
