Chapter 1: The Truth Hidden Beneath the Stars

The ballroom remained frozen in silence.
Scarlett stared at the young waitress as though the world had suddenly tilted beneath her feet.
"Evelyn?" she whispered again.
The girl nodded slowly, tears rolling down her cheeks.
"I never stopped looking for you, Scarlett."
A murmur swept through the crowd.
Ten years earlier, the Vance family had announced that eight-year-old Evelyn Vance had disappeared during a camping trip in the mountains. Search teams spent weeks combing through forests and rivers. Eventually, authorities declared the child presumed dead.
Scarlett had spent years mourning her little sister.
Now she stood before her.
Alive.
Across the room, Eleanor Vance's trembling hands betrayed her fear.
Richard Vance, Scarlett's father, pushed through the guests.
"What is happening here?" he demanded.
Evelyn turned toward him.
For a moment, father and daughter locked eyes.
Richard's face drained of color.
"You..." he whispered.
"I survived."
The words struck like thunder.
Suddenly, Eleanor stepped forward.
"This is absurd!" she shouted. "She's an imposter. Security, remove her immediately!"
But before anyone moved, Evelyn reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a small leather notebook.
The notebook had been found beside her after the accident.
Inside were handwritten entries.
Eleanor's entries.
Page after page described debts, secret affairs, and one terrifying plan.
A plan to remove Evelyn from the family forever.
The guests gasped as Evelyn read aloud.
Ten years ago, Eleanor had arranged for a guide to abandon the child deep in the mountains during the camping trip. She wanted Scarlett to become the sole heir to the Vance fortune.
But the plan had gone wrong.
A local farming couple had discovered Evelyn unconscious near a river and raised her as their own daughter.
For ten years she lived under a different name.
For ten years she believed her family had forgotten her.
Until she saw Scarlett's engagement announced on television.
And she finally came home.
The ballroom erupted into chaos.
But the greatest shock was still to come.

Richard Vance lowered his head in shame.
Because he had known part of the truth all along.
