CHAPTER 3: THE FIRST CRACKS

The first real panic came that evening.

Ryan tried to fill his car with gas.

Card declined.

He tried another.

Declined.

Then another.

Declined again.

Standing at the station, embarrassment burning his face, he called Linda.

“Mom… my cards aren’t working.”

Linda scoffed. “Then use hers.”

“I did. Same thing.”

Silence.

For the first time, Linda’s voice tightened. “That’s impossible.”

But it wasn’t.

Because at that exact moment, Victoria had completed phase two.

Every shared financial authorization tied to household accounts had been revoked.

Every “family access” privilege quietly dissolved.

Even Linda’s medication subscription—automatically billed to Victoria’s account—had been redirected.

And paused.

By morning, Linda would receive a notice from the pharmacy:

Payment method rejected. Renewal pending.

Inside the house, tension began to rise like a storm.

Ryan paced the kitchen.

“This is your fault,” Linda snapped suddenly. “You pushed her too far.”

Ryan turned sharply. “Me? You’re the one who—”

The argument stopped halfway.

Because Victoria appeared at the top of the stairs.

Calm.

Composed.

Hair uneven, self-cut, but her presence sharper than ever.

“I think there’s been a misunderstanding,” she said softly.

Both of them looked up.

She walked down slowly.

“I didn’t resign,” she said.

Linda frowned. “Excuse me?”

Victoria smiled faintly.

“I said I would devote myself to this family.”

Ryan exhaled in relief. “See? She’s—”

“I meant financially,” Victoria interrupted.

Silence.

The air shifted instantly.

“What did you do?” Linda asked, voice lowering.

Victoria tilted her head slightly.

“I made sure no one else can misuse what I built.”

Ryan’s expression tightened. “That includes me?”

Victoria looked directly at him.

“Yes.”

The word landed like a strike.

For the first time, Ryan didn’t look annoyed.

He looked uncertain.
