Chapter 1: The Witness No One Expected

The foyer fell into absolute silence.

Not even the grandfather clock dared to chime.

Ethan Carter slowly turned toward his six-year-old daughter.

"Lily..."

His voice cracked.

"Tell Daddy exactly what you saw."

The little girl clutched her stuffed rabbit so tightly that its ears bent beneath her trembling fingers. Tears shimmered in her eyes, but she never looked away from her mother.

"Grandma wasn't dizzy," she whispered.

"Mommy pushed her."

A sharp gasp rippled through the gathered relatives.

Vivian's elegant smile disappeared.

"Lily doesn't understand what she saw," Vivian said quickly. "She's frightened. She imagined—"

"No!"

Lily's tiny voice echoed across the marble walls.

"You were yelling at Grandma."

"You said..."

The child swallowed hard.

"...'If you tell Ethan, everything is over.'"

Every face turned toward Vivian.

Color drained from her face.

Ethan felt his pulse hammering in his ears.

His mother had always adored Vivian.

The two women argued from time to time, but murder?

No.

It couldn't be.

Yet when he looked into Vivian's eyes...

He didn't see grief.

He saw fear.

Not fear of losing her mother-in-law.

Fear of being caught.

Before anyone could speak again, paramedics rushed through the front doors.

One of them suddenly shouted,

"She's breathing!"

The entire family froze.

The elderly matriarch was still alive.
