Chapter 17 - Ethan’s Counterattack

The recording continued.

Ethan did not sound afraid.

He sounded furious.

“You stay away from my wife.”

Keller replied, “You still think Richard is running this?”

Silence.

“Richard is a parasite.

Carla is ambitious.

Mark is weak.”

Then Keller lowered his voice.

“But none of them built the structure.”

“What structure?”

“The one surrounding you.”

Ethan said nothing.

Keller continued.

“Your company.

Your marriage.

Your acquisitions.

Your auditors.

Your lenders.”

My skin crawled.

“How long?” Ethan asked.

“Nine years.”

A year before I met him.

Keller had been stealing from Walker Development long before Dad entered the picture.

My father had thought he was manipulating Ethan.

In reality, he had walked into someone else’s operation.

The recording revealed the missing connection.

Victor Dane, the private investigator Dad hired to research Ethan, had once worked for Keller.

Keller had quietly suggested Ethan as a target.

Dad thought he chose Ethan.

Keller had chosen him.

Why?

Because a financially desperate father with a daughter close to Ethan’s age created the perfect pressure point.

Dad introduced us.

Ethan and I genuinely fell in love.

Keller adapted.

When Ethan expanded Walker Development, Keller increased the theft.

When Dad began secretly draining smaller amounts through Mark, Keller let him.

He needed scapegoats.

Then Ethan discovered the irregularities.

The entire structure began collapsing.

On the recording, Ethan suddenly laughed.

“You made one mistake.”

Keller asked, “What?”

“You think I came here to learn the truth.”

A chair scraped.

“I came here to record you admitting it.”

The audio erupted in movement.

Keller cursed.

Ethan said, “Touch me and this uploads automatically.”

Then the recording ended.

Detective Sloan looked at the timestamp.

7:39 p.m.

Ethan left three minutes later.

At 8:16, his SUV crashed.

The police moved immediately.

Keller’s face appeared on statewide alerts.

His accounts were frozen.

Federal investigators joined the case.

Carla remained missing.

But we finally understood Ethan’s counterattack.

He had not been trapped.

He had built a dead-man archive.

If he disappeared, the evidence survived.

And because it required my voice, Keller could not access it.

Margaret opened another file.

A document titled FOR CLAIRE.

I clicked it.

Ethan appeared one last time.

His eyes looked exhausted.

“If this file unlocked, you figured out the phrase.”

I smiled through tears.

“You always were smarter than you let your father believe.”

I laughed and cried at the same time.

Then Ethan became serious.

“There is one person I still don’t understand.”

My smile faded.

“If something happens to me, do not trust anyone simply because they helped expose Richard.”

He leaned closer.

“Keller has a partner inside the family.”

I stopped breathing.

“Not Mark.”

He shook his head.

“Not Carla.”

My hands went cold.

There was only one other person.

May you like

My mother.
