PART 1 — The Pill Bottle Hit the Floor... Then Everything Fell Apart

The pill bottle exploded against the kitchen tile.

Its plastic lid bounced once before rolling beneath the table, while dozens of tiny white tablets scattered across the floor like spilled pearls.

Emily Carter froze.

Then, almost by instinct, she lowered herself to her knees.

One hand cradled the underside of her swollen belly. The other reached for the nearest pill.

A sharp bolt of pain ripped through her lower back.

She caught herself on the edge of the dining table before gravity could finish the job.

Across the room, her mother-in-law didn't move.

Linda Carter folded her arms tighter across her chest.

"Oh, please," she scoffed. "Stop acting like you're made of glass. Women have been having babies for thousands of years."

Emily kept her eyes on the floor.

The smell of roasted chicken drifting from the oven churned her stomach so violently she had to swallow hard to keep from vomiting.

No one noticed.

Or maybe they did.

Ryan certainly didn't.

Her husband sat only a few feet away, scrolling through his phone with the same detached expression he'd worn for months.

Without looking up, he muttered,

"If you still have enough energy to cry, you have enough energy to finish dinner."

The words landed harder than the medicine bottle ever could.

Silence settled over the kitchen.

Only the slow spinning ceiling fan dared to make a sound.

Emily reached for another pill.

As she bent lower, something slipped from the pocket of her oversized cardigan.

A folded medical report floated gently onto the tile.

Her heart stopped.

"No..."

She reached for it.

But Sophie was faster.

Ryan's younger sister picked up the folded paper before Emily's trembling fingers could.

"Give it back," Emily whispered.

There was no anger in her voice.

Only fear.

Sophie had already unfolded the document.

At first, she frowned.

Medical terminology.

Lab results.

Numbers she didn't understand.

Then her eyes found the diagnosis.

Everything about her changed.

The color drained from her face.

"...Wait."

Emily slowly stood, one hand gripping the table so tightly her knuckles turned white.

"Sophie..."

But Sophie wasn't listening anymore.

Her eyes raced over the page again.

And again.

"This..." she murmured.

"This isn't about your pregnancy."

The room seemed to shrink.

Ryan finally lifted his head.

"What now?"

Before Sophie answered, something else caught her attention.

A bright red lipstick stain.

Fresh.

Perfectly shaped.

Pressed against the collar of Ryan's white dress shirt.

Not a smear.

Not an accident.

A kiss.

She looked from the lipstick...

to Emily...

then back to the report.

The silence became unbearable.

Sophie lowered the paper slowly.

Her voice barely came out.

"Emily..."

She swallowed.

"You're dying..."

No one breathed.

"And while she's fighting for her life..."

She looked directly at her brother.

"...you're sleeping with someone else?"

Ryan blinked.

"What are you talking about?"

Emily lowered her eyes.

One tear slipped silently onto the back of her hand.

Linda let out a short, sarcastic laugh.

"Oh, don't be ridiculous."

Sophie raised the report.

"It says Stage Four."

Three words.

That was all it took.

The entire room seemed to stop existing.

Emily swayed.

Her hand flew instinctively to her stomach.

Then she felt it.

Warmth.

Slowly spreading down her leg.

She looked toward the floor.

A single drop of blood landed on the tile.

Another followed.

Sophie's chair scraped violently backward.

"No..."

Emily lifted her eyes to Ryan.

There was no anger left in them.

Only exhaustion.

"I wanted to tell you..."

Her voice was little more than a breath.

"...after our baby was born."

Then the world went dark.

Her body collapsed before anyone could reach her.

The medical report slipped from Sophie's hand and landed face-up beside Emily.

Across the top of the page, in bold black letters, were the words no family ever wants to read.

STAGE IV METASTATIC OVARIAN CANCER.

For the first time that evening...

Ryan Carter looked terrified.
