CHAPTER 2: WHAT THE BLANKET HID

Alejandro could not move.
For one long second, the whole mansion seemed to stop breathing.
Valeria lay trembling on the bed, her ivory nightgown pulled tight over her pregnant stomach.
But it wasn’t her belly that made Alejandro freeze.
It was her arms.
Her wrists.
Her shoulders.
Dark bruises bloomed across her skin like fingerprints.
Not one.
Not two.
Dozens.
Some old.
Some fresh.
Some shaped exactly like hands.
Alejandro’s phone slipped from his grip and hit the floor.
“What… happened to you?”
Valeria turned her face away.
That hurt him more than the bruises.
Because she wasn’t afraid of the pain.
She was afraid of him.
“Alejandro,” she whispered, “please don’t make me say it here.”
“Here?”
His voice cracked.
“Who did this?”
Before Valeria could answer, a soft voice came from the doorway.
“Pregnant women bruise easily.”
Marcela stood there in her silk blouse, elegant and calm.
Too calm.
Alejandro slowly turned.
His sister’s expression was perfect.
Concerned enough to look innocent.
Cold enough to look guilty.
“What are you doing here?” he asked.
Marcela stepped inside.
“I heard shouting.”
Valeria’s entire body went rigid.
Alejandro saw it.
For the first time, he saw everything.
The way his wife stopped breathing when Marcela entered.
The way her fingers curled around the bedsheet.
The way her eyes searched the room for an escape.
Marcela glanced at Valeria and sighed.
“She’s been unstable for weeks. Mother wanted to call a doctor, but Valeria refused.”
“That’s not true,” Valeria whispered.
Marcela smiled softly.
“There it is again. The lying.”
Alejandro looked down at the phone on the floor.
The blurry security photo still glowed on the screen.
The man leaving through the back entrance.
The image that had poisoned his mind.
“Who is he?” Alejandro asked quietly.
Valeria swallowed.
“A doctor.”
Marcela’s smile faded.
Alejandro looked at his wife.
“What doctor?”
Valeria’s voice shook.
“The only one who believed me.”
Marcela moved fast.
Too fast.
She reached for the phone.
Alejandro caught her wrist before she touched it.
His grip tightened.
Marcela’s perfect mask cracked.
“Let go of me.”
Alejandro didn’t.
Valeria slowly pushed herself up against the pillows.
Her face was pale.
Her lips trembled.
But her eyes finally met his.
“Your mother has been giving me tea every night.”
The room went silent.
Alejandro frowned.
“What?”
Valeria placed both hands over her belly.
“She said it was for sleep. For nausea. For the baby.”
Marcela laughed once.
A sharp, ugly sound.
“This is insane.”
Valeria looked at her.
“No. What’s insane is that after I drank it, I started bleeding.”
Alejandro’s face changed.
Valeria continued, barely breathing between words.
“I called my own doctor. Not the family doctor. Mine.”
Marcela stepped back.
“The man in the photo,” Alejandro said.
Valeria nodded.
“He came at two in the morning because I was terrified someone would stop him.”
Alejandro turned toward Marcela.
She lifted her chin.
“You’re going to believe her?”
Before he could answer, another voice entered the room.
Older.
Colder.
“Of course he won’t.”
Doña Esther stood at the doorway in a cream robe, diamonds already at her throat.
She looked at Valeria’s bruises.
Then at Alejandro.
And she did not look surprised.
She only looked annoyed.
“Enough drama,” Esther said. “This family has survived worse than a hysterical girl with a weak pregnancy.”
Valeria flinched.
Alejandro felt something inside him split open.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Something worse.
Clarity.
He looked at his mother and whispered:
“What did you do?”
May you like
Esther smiled.
And that smile told him everything.
