Chapter 4: A Family Chosen Twice

With the help of detectives, Daniel's past slowly emerged.

After the trafficker's arrest, several children had disappeared into broken foster systems.

Daniel had escaped from an abusive placement two years earlier.

Since then, he had survived alone.

Cleaning windshields.

Collecting cans.

Sleeping wherever he could.

Every night, he carried one small memory.

A faded blue baby blanket.

The same blanket Evelyn had knitted while pregnant.

DNA testing confirmed what neither of them needed science to prove.

Daniel Carter.

Biological son of Evelyn Carter.

Emily hugged him before anyone else spoke.

"I knew you belonged with us."

Daniel blinked.

"You aren't mad?"

"Why would I be?"

"You have to share your mom now."

Emily smiled.

"I always wanted a big brother."

Daniel laughed for the first time.

Not politely.

Not nervously.

A real laugh.

Evelyn watched them from the doorway.

For years she believed fate had taken one child and given her another.

Instead...

Life had been waiting to reunite all three of them.
