Chapter 12 - THE LAST ROURKE

Chaos exploded inside the tunnel.

Federal agents returned fire toward the far junction.

Rourke disappeared behind concrete.

Grace dragged Elena behind cover.

Adrian pulled Evelyn down.

Rebecca crawled toward Richard.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

He was alive.

Barely.

Samuel pushed himself against the wall despite his own wound.

“Rourke!”

His voice echoed.

No answer.

Julian moved toward the utility panel.

Marcus stayed outside with another team, coordinating the surface perimeter.

Evelyn looked at Rebecca.

“Can you help Richard?”

Rebecca pressed cloth against his wound.

“Chest is clear.”

“Shoulder.”

Richard opened his eyes.

His face twisted.

“Of course.”

Rebecca leaned closer.

“Don’t talk.”

He almost laughed.

“First kind thing you’ve said to me.”

“Still not kindness.”

She pressed harder.

“It’s pressure.”

Another shot struck the wall.

Adrian covered Evelyn.

She looked furious.

“Stop using me as furniture.”

“Not now.”

“Exactly now.”

Julian shouted.

“Rourke’s moving toward the north utility shaft!”

Grace radioed the surface team.

No signal.

Rourke had restored the jammer.

Samuel looked at Julian.

“There’s another way out.”

“Where?”

“Old storm drain.”

“How do you know?”

Samuel’s face hardened.

“Because his father used it.”

Adrian stared.

“For what?”

“To move children without using the front entrance.”

The answer hit everyone.

Evelyn felt sick.

Julian pointed.

“Show me.”

Samuel tried to stand.

His legs failed.

Adrian caught him.

“You’re staying.”

Samuel shoved him away.

“I lost thirty-four years to that family.”

“You’ll lose the rest if you bleed out.”

Samuel stared at him.

Adrian’s voice softened.

“You don’t have to earn survival.”

Samuel’s face changed.

The sentence reached somewhere deep.

He sat back.

Julian took his directions.

Then disappeared with two agents.

Evelyn looked toward Richard.

His eyes were open.

He stared at the ceiling.

She moved closer.

Adrian grabbed her arm.

“Grandma.”

“I know.”

She knelt beside Richard.

He looked at her.

“Still trying to save children?”

“You’re fifty-eight.”

“Answer.”

“Yes.”

Richard laughed weakly.

“Waste of time.”

“No.”

“You saved three boys once.”

“I fed them.”

“Same thing sometimes.”

Adrian watched him.

Richard turned his head.

“You really don’t remember me?”

Adrian frowned.

“No.”

“I saw you twice when you were a teenager.”

Adrian stiffened.

“Where?”

“Basketball court.”

“Foster home parking lot.”

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“You watched us.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Richard’s face tightened.

“At first, my father ordered it.”

“And later?”

“I wanted to know what happened to boys who escaped.”

Adrian stared.

“What did you see?”

Richard looked at him.

“You kept sharing food.”

Adrian said nothing.

Richard smiled faintly.

“Even when you had money, you split everything three ways.”

Marcus’s voice came through Julian’s earpiece from above.

“Surface team has movement near storm drain exit.”

Grace listened.

Richard continued.

“I envied you.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“You had everything.”

Richard’s eyes filled.

“No.”

“I had things.”

Evelyn understood.

There was a difference.

Richard whispered.

“You had brothers.”

Adrian looked toward Samuel.

Then toward the tunnel where Julian had disappeared.

His anger changed shape.

Richard closed his eyes.

“My father said loyalty was a leash.”

“He said only weak men needed people.”

“He taught me to own people instead.”

Evelyn touched his hand.

Richard looked surprised.

“I am not forgiving you.”

“I know.”

“But you’re bleeding.”

He laughed weakly.

“Rebecca was right about you.”

Evelyn glanced at her daughter.

“What did she say?”

Richard’s eyes shifted toward Rebecca.

“That you made kindness feel like an accusation.”

Rebecca almost smiled.

Then gunfire echoed from the north shaft.

Samuel tried to stand again.

Adrian held him down.

Seconds later, Julian’s voice came through.

“We have Rourke cornered.”

Grace answered.

“Status?”

“He’s at the storm gate.”

Another sound.

Metal crashing.

Julian cursed.

Then silence.

Adrian looked toward the tunnel.

“Julian?”

No answer.

Samuel went pale.

“Julian!”

A minute later, Julian emerged.

His sleeve was torn.

Blood ran from his forehead.

But he was walking.

Samuel closed his eyes with relief.

Adrian stared.

“Rourke?”

Julian shook his head.

“Gone.”

Grace’s expression hardened.

“How?”

“He blew the gate and entered the river culvert.”

Marcus’s voice came through from the surface.

“Helicopter search starting.”

Julian looked toward Richard.

“He won’t get far.”

Richard opened his eyes.

“Yes, he will.”

Everyone turned.

Richard’s voice was weak.

“He has safe houses.”

“Accounts.”

“People.”

Grace leaned closer.

“Where?”

Richard smiled bitterly.

“You want me to betray the last man protecting my family?”

Elena looked at him.

“What family?”

Richard went still.

She stood several feet away.

Tears covered her face.

“Silas is dead.”

“Margaret is dead.”

“Rourke just shot you.”

Richard stared.

Elena continued.

“What family are you protecting?”

His face collapsed.

For the first time, Richard looked like a stolen child instead of a powerful man.

He whispered.

“I don’t know.”

Elena approached slowly.

She stopped beside him.

“I do.”

Richard looked up.

She touched his hair.

“You have me.”

He began to cry.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

One tear.

Then another.

“I don’t know how.”

Elena’s voice broke.

“Neither do I.”

She held his face.

“But we can learn.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Then he whispered.

“Dock 19.”

Grace leaned closer.

“What?”

“Rourke keeps a boat under a shell company.”

“Pier nineteen.”

Julian immediately relayed the information.

Marcus redirected teams.

Richard continued.

“Second safe house.”

“Maple Ridge.”

“House under his mother’s maiden name.”

Grace nodded.

“Anything else?”

Richard opened his eyes.

“Yes.”

He looked at Adrian.

“The ledger is not enough.”

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

“Silas kept film.”

Evelyn’s blood went cold.

“Film?”

“Recordings.”

“Of what?”

Richard’s face twisted.

“Transfers.”

“Meetings.”

“Payments.”

Marcus’s voice came through the earpiece.

“Why?”

Richard laughed weakly.

“Insurance.”

“He blackmailed everyone.”

Julian asked.

“Where is it?”

Richard stared at him.

“Vane family mausoleum.”

Nobody spoke.

Evelyn blinked.

“You’re joking.”

“I wish.”

Adrian looked exhausted.

“Of course the criminal evidence is in a mausoleum.”

Richard gave a faint smile.

“My father liked symbolism.”

Grace called for medical transport.

Agents moved Richard and Samuel toward the surface.

Evelyn stayed beside Adrian.

He looked at her.

“This started with a plate of leftovers.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“This started because people thought poor children were easy to erase.”

Adrian looked down the tunnel.

“And we’re ending it.”

Evelyn squeezed his hand.

“Not yet.”

By dawn, Rourke’s boat was found.

Empty.

Blood on the deck.

No body.

At 7:12 a.m., Commissioner Daniel Rourke released a video from an unknown location.

He sat before a plain wall.

His police uniform jacket hung behind him.

He looked calm.

He accused Adrian, Marcus, Julian, Evelyn, Rebecca, and Samuel of participating in a conspiracy to extort the Vane family.

He claimed the ledger was fabricated.

He claimed Richard had been coerced.

He claimed federal investigators had been manipulated.

Then he held up a document.

Evelyn recognized it instantly.

Thomas Hart’s original investigative report.

Rourke smiled into the camera.

“Thomas Hart did not die a hero.”

Evelyn stopped breathing.

Rourke continued.

“He was on Silas Vane’s payroll.”

Adrian looked toward her.

Rourke lifted the report.

May you like

“And I have his signature to prove it.”
