Chapter 5: The Secret Buried for Twenty Years

For several seconds, Grant Hale forgot how to breathe.

The courthouse hallway disappeared.

The reporters.

The cameras.

The whispers.

Everything faded except one sentence.

“The person who made sure she believed I was dead was your father.”

Grant stared at Daniel Bennett.

The man who had been a ghost for twenty years.

The man who was supposed to have died before Evelyn became his wife.

The man whose DNA was inside the children Grant had raised in his mind before they were even born.

“You’re lying.”

Grant’s voice was low.

Daniel did not react.

“I expected you to say that.”

“You were declared dead.”

“No.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“I was declared gone.”

The difference sounded small.

But it carried twenty years of pain.

Grant looked at Calvin.

“Is this verified?”

Calvin nodded slowly.

“We confirmed his identity this morning.”

“How?”

“Fingerprint records. Medical history. And the DNA match.”

Grant’s eyes moved toward Daniel.

“You were alive this entire time?”

Daniel looked away.

“No.”

The answer surprised everyone.

“I was alive when Evelyn lost me.”

His voice became heavier.

“But for many years after that, I was barely living.”

Inside the courthouse conference room, the truth began to unfold.

Daniel sat across from Grant.

Mara sat beside him.

Calvin reviewed documents.

Vanessa arrived twenty minutes later.

She walked in confidently.

But the confidence disappeared when she saw Daniel.

For the first time since anyone had known her…

Vanessa looked afraid.

Daniel noticed.

“So you’re Vanessa Cole.”

Her face changed.

“You know who I am?”

Daniel gave a cold smile.

“Evelyn wrote about you.”

Grant looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel reached into his coat and placed a folder on the table.

“Evelyn sent me letters.”

Mara looked confused.

“She knew you were alive?”

Daniel nodded.

“She found out six months ago.”

The room froze.

Grant stared.

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t she tell me?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Because she discovered something else.”

He opened the folder.

Inside were copies of emails.

Photographs.

Financial records.

Mara picked up the first page.

Her expression changed.

“What is this?”

Daniel answered.

“Evidence that your wife’s death was not an accident.”

Nobody moved.

The first document was a payment record.

A transfer of $250,000.

From an offshore account.

To Vanessa Cole.

Grant looked at Vanessa.

Her face went pale.

“That’s not what you think.”

Calvin picked up another page.

“Then explain it.”

Vanessa said nothing.

Grant turned toward her.

“Vanessa?”

She looked at him.

“You’re going to believe them?”

The question sounded desperate.

Grant didn’t answer.

Because for the first time…

he didn’t know.

Mara looked at Daniel.

“Tell us everything.”

Daniel leaned back.

Twenty years of pain sat behind his eyes.

“Evelyn and I were married when we were young.”

Grant knew that.

“Your father hated me.”

Grant frowned.

“My father?”

Daniel nodded.

“Richard Hale believed Evelyn was ruining your family’s future.”

“Why?”

“Because Evelyn knew something.”

“What?”

Daniel looked at Mara.

Then at Grant.

“Your father was involved in illegal financial deals.”

Grant laughed bitterly.

“My father was a businessman.”

Daniel’s expression didn’t change.

“That’s what he wanted everyone to believe.”

Calvin quietly opened another file.

“We found records.”

Grant looked down.

Old company documents.

Hidden accounts.

Names.

Dates.

And his father’s signature.

The room became colder.

“My father…”

Daniel continued.

“He arranged the accident.”

Mara covered her mouth.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“He didn’t expect me to survive.”

Grant stood.

“You’re accusing my father of murder?”

“I’m saying he tried.”

“And you disappeared?”

Daniel looked down.

“Because when I woke up, I was told Evelyn had died.”

Mara looked shocked.

“She wasn’t dead.”

“No.”

Daniel’s voice broke slightly.

“She was alive.”

“Then why didn’t you come back?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because the man who rescued me told me something.”

“What?”

“He showed me photographs.”

Daniel looked at Grant.

“Photographs of Evelyn with another man.”

Silence.

Grant understood.

Someone had forged evidence.

Someone had convinced Daniel that Evelyn had moved on.

“That wasn’t true.”

“No.”

Daniel looked toward the window.

“But I believed it.”

Meanwhile, at Harbor Point, Helen Carter found something.

She had waited until Vanessa left.

Then she searched the office.

Not because she wanted to invade privacy.

Because Evelyn had asked her to.

Three days before delivery.

Helen remembered.

Evelyn had held her hand.

“Something happens to me, there’s something you need to find.”

At the time, Helen had laughed.

“Don’t talk like that.”

Evelyn had smiled sadly.

“Promise me.”

Helen had promised.

Now she opened the hidden compartment behind the old bookshelf.

Inside was a small black box.

Her hands shook.

Inside were three things.

A USB drive.

A handwritten letter.

And a second DNA report.

Helen opened the letter first.

Only one sentence was written.

Helen, if you found this, Grant already knows the truth.

She looked at the USB drive.

Then at the DNA report.

Her face changed.

Because Evelyn had not only tested the babies.

She had tested something else.

Something much more dangerous.

The second report contained a name.

Vanessa Cole.

And the result:

Biological relationship confirmed.

Helen whispered:

“No…”

Because Vanessa wasn’t just Grant’s mistress.

She was connected to the Hale family in a way nobody expected.

Back at the courthouse, Daniel received a phone call.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”

Everyone watched him.

After a few seconds, he lowered the phone.

“Someone broke into Evelyn’s house.”

Grant stood.

“What?”

Daniel looked at him.

“They were looking for something.”

Mara felt a chill.

“What?”

Daniel looked at her.

“The original DNA report.”

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly everyone understood.

The test was never meant to reveal only who the father was.

It was meant to expose someone.

Someone who had spent twenty years hiding.

That night, the police arrived at Harbor Point.

Helen was waiting outside.

In her hand was the black box.

May you like

And inside it…

was the final secret Evelyn Hale had died trying to protect.
