Chapter 3: The Will Nobody Knew About

Richard tried to leave.
Two security guards moved toward the aisle, but Arthur raised one hand.
“No one leaves.”
His voice was weak, but it carried through the entire church.
Then an older woman stood from the third row.
She wore a gray suit and held a black briefcase.
Richard froze.
“You,” he whispered.
The woman stepped into the aisle.
“My name is Margaret Hale,” she said. “I was Eleanor Whitmore’s attorney.”
Arthur stared at her.
“My wife’s attorney?”
Margaret nodded.
“Your wife never believed Evelyn ran away willingly. Before she died, she created a sealed amendment to her will.”
Richard’s breathing changed.
Margaret opened the briefcase.
“She stated that if Evelyn or any direct descendant of Evelyn was ever found, Evelyn’s share of the Whitmore estate would be restored immediately.”
Vanessa finally spoke.
“Wait… what does that mean?”
Margaret looked directly at Richard.
“It means Clara Whitmore is entitled to the portion of the family estate Richard has controlled for thirty years.”
The church exploded again.
Richard lunged forward.
“That document is fake!”
Margaret did not blink.
“It was notarized, witnessed, and stored with the county court.”
Clara stood still, stunned.
Arthur turned to her.
“You are my granddaughter.”
For the first time, Clara’s composure broke.
“I didn’t come for money,” she said. “I came because my mother died wanting her father to know she never stopped loving him.”
Arthur reached for her hand.
But Richard suddenly laughed.
Coldly.
“You think this changes anything? Do you know how many people depend on me? Banks. Lawyers. Judges. You have a sad story and an old photograph.”
Then Daniel stepped away from the altar.
“No,” he said.
Richard looked at his son.
Daniel removed his boutonniere and dropped it onto the floor.
“I won’t marry into this lie. And I won’t stand beside a man who erased his own sister.”
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Daniel, don’t you dare embarrass me.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You were more upset about the wedding than the truth.”
The bride’s face hardened.
That was when Clara noticed something.
Vanessa was not shocked.
She was afraid.
Clara looked at Margaret.
“Did she know?”
Margaret opened another file.
“We believe so.”
Vanessa’s bouquet slipped from her hands.

Because this wedding had never been about love.
It had been Richard’s final move to secure the estate before the truth came out.
