Chapter 2 — The Bride Who Still Walked In
By evening, the Millberg Hotel ballroom was full.
Two hundred guests sat beneath crystal chandeliers, whispering about flowers, dresses, and how beautiful Camila looked.
She had not canceled anything.
That was what frightened Thiago.
She walked into the rehearsal dinner wearing her white dress, her dark hair pinned softly behind one ear, her makeup perfect. If anyone noticed her hands trembling, they said nothing.
Thiago stood near the stage, smiling too hard.
His mother pulled Camila aside. “Whatever happened between you two, fix it privately. This wedding is important to both families.”
Camila looked at her.
For the first time, she understood.
They knew.
Maybe not all of it. But enough.
Enough to protect him.
Enough to silence her.
Thiago approached carefully. “Camila, please. I made a mistake.”
“A mistake?” she asked.
His voice dropped. “It meant nothing.”
Camila looked around the ballroom.
At the flowers she had chosen.
At the photos of them projected on the wall.
At the guests who had flown in to celebrate a love story that had already died upstairs.
Then she smiled faintly.
“Then tomorrow,” she said, “we will let everyone decide what it meant.”
Thiago’s face changed.
“What did you do?”
Camila did not answer.
Across the ballroom, her best friend Marina stepped onto the small stage and adjusted the microphone.
The speakers crackled.
The room quieted.
Thiago reached for Camila’s wrist. She pulled away.
Marina smiled at the guests.
“Before dinner,” she said, “Camila prepared a short video for everyone.”
Thiago’s breath stopped.
The screen behind them flickered.
For one terrible second, Camila thought she might break.
Then the first image appeared.
Not the hotel room.
Not yet.
It was a video of Thiago months earlier, promising her forever.
The guests smiled.
Then the footage changed.
A hotel hallway.
Room 1704.
Camila opening the door.
Thiago’s mother stood up sharply.
Thiago whispered, “Camila, don’t.”

The truth had already entered the room.
