Chapter Two: The Woman Behind the Lie

Three weeks earlier, Ryan’s mother, Margaret Carter, had walked into his office with a file folder and tears in her eyes.
Margaret never cried.
Not when Ryan’s father died.
Not when the company almost collapsed.
Not even when Ryan married Emma against her wishes.
So when she placed that folder on his desk and whispered, “I’m sorry, son,” Ryan believed every word before he opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Emma outside a private clinic.
Emma speaking with a man Ryan didn’t recognize.
Emma taking an envelope from him.
Then came the medical report.
Pregnancy confirmed.
Father unknown.
Ryan remembered the room spinning.
Margaret had gripped his shoulder.
“She was going to trap you,” she whispered. “Take half your fortune and pass another man’s child off as yours.”
Ryan had driven to the hospital that same night, furious, ready to confront Emma.
But when he arrived, he found her alone in an exam room, pale and frightened.
She had looked up with tears in her eyes and whispered, “Ryan, I wanted to tell you tonight.”
Then the heartbeat played.
And everything inside him broke open.
For fifteen minutes, he forgot suspicion. He held her hand. He watched the tiny shadow on the screen. He let himself imagine being a father.
Then Margaret called.
And by morning, doubt returned.
By the anniversary dinner, doubt had hardened into cruelty.
Now, sitting across from Emma, Ryan finally saw the truth.
The photographs meant nothing.
The man outside the clinic could have been anyone.
The report had no real signature.
And Emma had never once looked guilty.
She had looked wounded.
Ryan pushed the divorce papers away.
“Emma, my mother showed me something.”
Emma’s expression changed.
Not shock.
Recognition.
“She showed you the file,” Emma said quietly.
Ryan froze.
“You knew?”
Emma reached into her handbag and pulled out a second envelope.
This one was thicker.
She placed it on the table.
“I knew because she sent me one too.”
Ryan opened it with stiff fingers.
Inside were messages.
Screenshots.
Bank transfers.
A copy of the fake medical report.
And one photograph that made his blood turn cold.
Margaret Carter sitting across from the unknown man.
Paying him.
Emma’s voice was barely above a whisper.
“Your mother didn’t think I was carrying another man’s child, Ryan.”
May you like
She looked directly into his eyes.
“She knew the baby was yours.”
