Chapter 15 - THE SON WHO WALKED IN WILLINGLY

Richard did not want to believe Jonathan was working with Mason.
Ethan did.
“He took the drive once.”
“He gave it back.”
“After testing us.”
“That matters.”
“So does walking into Mason’s trap willingly.”
Richard looked at Pierce.
“Why did Jonathan go?”
Pierce shook his head.
“Mason called.”
“What did he say?”
“I didn’t hear.”
“Where did Jonathan come from?”
“Service entrance.”
“Was he armed?”
“No.”
“Afraid?”
Pierce laughed weakly.
“No.”
That concerned Richard most.
They continued toward the server room.
A steel door waited at the end.
Mason’s voice came through a speaker.
“Right on time.”
Richard stopped.
The door opened.
Hope sat beside Ellen.
James stood nearby.
Jonathan stood beside the server console.
Mason held a pistol.
Richard looked at Jonathan.
“You came.”
Jonathan nodded.
“Obviously.”
“Why?”
“To finish what Margaret started.”
Mason laughed.
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
Jonathan looked toward Hope.
The little girl stared at Richard.
“Are you really my grandfather?”
Richard’s chest tightened.
“Yes.”
Hope studied him.
“You’re old.”
Ethan almost laughed.
Even Mason smiled.
Richard nodded.
“I’ve been told.”
Hope looked toward Ethan.
“And you’re Ethan?”
He froze.
She did not call him Dad.
Of course she didn’t.
“Yes.”
Hope stared.
“My mom said you’re my biological father.”
Ethan’s voice shook.
“Yes.”
Hope nodded as if processing information from a school lesson.
Then she asked.
“Did you know about me?”
Ethan’s eyes filled immediately.
“No.”
She studied him.
“You didn’t give me away?”
“No.”
His voice broke.
“I swear.”
Hope looked toward Ellen.
Ellen nodded.
Hope turned back.
“Okay.”
One word.
Ethan nearly collapsed from relief.
Mason sighed.
“Touching.”
He pointed toward the biometric console.
“Richard.”
Richard stepped forward.
Jonathan remained beside the machine.
Richard looked at him.
“You’re cooperating?”
Jonathan said nothing.
Mason answered.
“He understands practicality.”
Richard’s eyes stayed on Jonathan.
“Do you?”
Jonathan finally looked at him.
“I understand Margaret built a trap.”
Mason’s expression changed slightly.
Richard caught it.
Jonathan continued.
“And I understand Mason believes he can redirect the archive before it activates.”
Mason pointed the gun toward him.
“Careful.”
Jonathan smiled.
“You still need me.”
Richard suddenly understood.
Jonathan was not helping Mason.
He was buying time.
Richard asked.
“What did Margaret tell you?”
Jonathan’s eyes filled.
“The last time I saw her?”
“Yes.”
Jonathan looked toward the console.
“She said one day Martin might find me.”
“She told me not to believe the first story he gave me.”
Richard swallowed.
“She knew him.”
“Yes.”
Jonathan smiled sadly.
“She knew all of you.”
Richard looked at the server.
Countdown.
One hour eleven minutes.
Mason stepped closer.
“Enough family history.”
He gestured.
“Finger.”
Richard placed his thumb on the reader.
ACCESS ONE ACCEPTED.
Mason looked toward Jonathan.
“Now you.”
Jonathan stepped forward.
Richard watched his face.
Jonathan placed his thumb against the glass.
ACCESS TWO ACCEPTED.
The server unlocked.
Mason smiled.
Then a message appeared.
FINAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
Mason frowned.
“What?”
Jonathan smiled.
Richard understood.
Margaret had added another layer.
A question appeared on screen.
ENTER THE NAME OF THE PERSON THIS TRUST WAS CREATED TO PROTECT.
Mason typed.
ETHAN WHITMORE.
Incorrect.
Again.
RICHARD WHITMORE.
Incorrect.
MARGARET WHITMORE.
Incorrect.
Mason slammed the desk.
Jonathan laughed.
“You never understood her.”
Mason pointed the gun at him.
“What’s the answer?”
Jonathan shrugged.
“I don’t know.”
Mason looked at Richard.
“You were married to her for forty-eight years.”
Richard stared at the question.
Who had Margaret built the trust to protect?
Not Richard.
Not Ethan.
Not herself.
Richard remembered her letter.
She wanted to return money to victims.
He typed.
THE VICTIMS.
Incorrect.
Mason laughed.
“Apparently you didn’t understand her either.”
Ethan stared at the screen.
Then he looked toward Hope.
Something clicked.
Margaret had created the trust after discovering the scheme.
But modified it years later.
She had thought about future children.
Future descendants.
Maybe the question was not asking for one person.
Ethan approached.
Mason raised the gun.
“Stay.”
Ethan pointed toward the screen.
“I know.”
Mason narrowed his eyes.
“Say it.”
Ethan looked at Richard.
Then Jonathan.
Then Hope.
“The family.”
Mason typed.
THE WHITMORE FAMILY.
Incorrect.
Richard frowned.
Jonathan whispered.
“Not Whitmore.”
Everyone looked at him.
He stared at the screen.
“Margaret never thought family meant a surname.”
Richard remembered something she had said during one of their earliest arguments.
A family is whoever refuses to abandon you when staying becomes difficult.
Richard’s eyes moved toward Ethan.
Then Hope.
Then James and Ellen.
Hope’s real family included people named Carter.
Jonathan had another surname.
Sophia was still part of Hope’s story despite everything.
Margaret would not have chosen a surname.
Richard typed one word.
CHILDREN.
The system beeped.
ACCESS GRANTED.
Mason smiled.
The server directory opened.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Transfer records.
Audio files.
Photographs.
Depositions.
Names.
Mason inserted a drive.
He began copying everything.
Richard watched the progress.
Mason was too focused.
Richard looked toward Jonathan.
Jonathan subtly nodded.
Then the lights flickered.
Mason turned.
“What?”
Jonathan smiled.
“Margaret’s second trap.”
The server began displaying warnings.
UNAUTHORIZED EXTRACTION DETECTED.
ARCHIVE DUPLICATION INITIATED.
Mason’s face changed.
“No.”
Files began transmitting.
Federal evidence servers.
Multiple destinations.
Mason pulled the drive.
The transfer continued.
He slammed keys.
Nothing stopped it.
Richard smiled.
“You lost.”
Mason’s face twisted.
He pointed the gun toward Hope.
Ethan moved instantly.
Richard moved too.
Jonathan struck Mason’s arm.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Hope screamed.
James pulled her beneath the table.
Ethan tackled Mason.
Richard grabbed the weapon.
Mason hit Ethan.
Jonathan grabbed Mason from behind.
The server alarm screamed.
Mason drove an elbow into Jonathan.
He broke free.
Then he ran toward the tunnel.
Richard shouted.
Federal agents entered from the opposite door.
Mason turned.
Trapped.
For one second he stood between Richard and the agents.
Then he laughed.
“This isn’t finished.”
Richard held the gun lowered.
“Yes.”
“It is.”
Mason looked toward Hope.
“No.”
Richard followed his eyes.
Mason smiled.
“You still don’t know who signed her adoption paperwork.”
Ethan froze.
Mason continued.
“You think Sophia did?”
Sophia was not there.
Ethan stared.
Mason laughed.
“Look at the original record.”
Agents grabbed him.
He did not resist.
He kept smiling at Ethan.
“Ask Richard’s lawyer.”
Then Mason was handcuffed.
Richard immediately called Benjamin.
“Find Hope’s original adoption papers.”
Benjamin did.
The documents had been hidden among the foundation archives.
Ethan opened them.
Sophia’s signature appeared.
His own forged signature appeared.
And beneath the agency authorization was another name.
Richard stared.
He recognized it.
BENJAMIN COLE.
Everyone turned toward the family attorney.
Benjamin’s face became pale.
Ethan whispered.
“You signed it.”
Benjamin stepped backward.
“No.”
Richard stared at his closest legal adviser of thirty years.
Benjamin shook his head.
“That is not my signature.”
Ethan held up the page.
“It looks exactly like it.”
Benjamin’s voice became desperate.
“It was forged.”
Richard said nothing.
Benjamin continued.
“Richard, you know me.”
Richard’s expression was unreadable.
After everything that had happened, those four words meant nothing anymore.
You know me.
Ethan had thought he knew Sophia.
Richard had thought he knew Martin.
Margaret had thought she knew Thomas.
Trust without proof had already burned them all.
Richard held out his hand.
“Give me your phone.”
Benjamin stared.
“What?”
“Your phone.”
“Richard—”
“Now.”
Benjamin slowly handed it over.
Richard opened recent calls.
One number appeared twelve times over the previous week.
Unknown.
But Richard recognized the final four digits.
The same number Mason had used earlier.
Benjamin went white.
Ethan stepped forward.
May you like
Richard looked at his attorney.
“Start talking.”
