Chapter 1: The Girl in the Car

Chapter 1: The Girl in the Car
The old woman’s finger remained firmly on the emergency button.
A loud alarm echoed through the laundromat.
Outside, the man spun around and sprinted toward the black SUV parked across the street.
"He's going for the car!" someone shouted.
Two customers rushed to the windows.
Through the rain, they could see a small hand pounding weakly against the fogged rear window.
A little girl.
She couldn't have been older than six.
The boy behind the counter began crying.
"Emma!"
The old woman knelt beside him.
"Is that your sister?"
He nodded frantically.
The man yanked open the driver's door, clearly intending to flee before police arrived.
But he never made it.
A pickup truck that had been stopped at the traffic light suddenly pulled in front of the SUV, blocking its path.
Then another driver parked behind him.
The strangers had understood exactly what was happening.
The man was trapped.
Within minutes, police sirens pierced the storm.
Officers surrounded the vehicle and pulled the terrified girl to safety.
As Emma was carried toward the laundromat wrapped in a blanket, she immediately reached for her brother.
The twins clung to each other, sobbing.
Everyone believed the nightmare was finally over.
They were wrong.
Because when detectives ran the man's identification, they discovered something chilling.

The man wasn't their father.
And legally, he wasn't supposed to have the children at all.
