Part 2: The Truth Inside the Blue Folder Silenced the Room
Carol's eyes dropped to the blue folder tucked beneath Lily's blanket, and for the first time that afternoon, her voice cracked.
"Emily... what's in that folder?"
I looked down at it, then back at her.
"The truth."
No one moved.
The dining room, which had echoed with laughter only minutes before, had become so quiet that I could hear the grandfather clock in the hallway ticking.
Carol swallowed.
"What are you talking about?"
I slowly opened the folder and pulled out several papers.
"Lily's hospital records."
I held up the first page.
"Her NICU discharge summary."
The second.
"Her pediatrician's growth chart."
The third.
"And a letter from her specialist stating she is perfectly healthy, just naturally small because she was born six weeks early."
I looked directly into my mother's eyes.
"You knew all of this."
She didn't answer.
"You've had copies since October."
Mark frowned.
"Wait... Mom already knew?"
I nodded.
"I emailed everyone after Lily came home."
Jenna slowly looked at Carol.
"So... everything you said tonight..."
"...was a lie," Evan finished.
Carol's face flushed.
"I was only trying to motivate Emily."
"No," I replied quietly.
"You were trying to humiliate my daughter the same way you humiliated me my entire life."
No one defended her.
Grandma began crying silently into her napkin.
I picked up the last gift beneath the tree.
"This conversation is over."
Evan opened the front door.
Cold winter air rushed inside.
As we walked toward the driveway, Carol finally shouted.
"Emily! Don't leave over one joke!"
I stopped without turning around.
"I'm not leaving because of one joke."
I looked back at her.
"I'm leaving because this is the first time I've realized you don't deserve another chance."
Then we walked away.
The front door closed behind us.
