CHAPTER 2 — The Photograph No One Was Supposed to See

For three full seconds, no one in the ballroom moved.
The orchestra stopped mid-note.
Champagne glasses remained suspended halfway to smiling lips.
The billionaire, Adrian Whitmore, stared at the faded photograph as though the paper itself had reached inside his chest.
His fingers trembled.
Not from anger.
From recognition.
It was old.
At least twenty-six years old.
The corners had been folded so many times the image was beginning to disappear.
Yet Adrian could still see every detail.
A younger version of himself.
Twenty years old.
Leather jacket.
Wind-blown hair.
Smiling in a way he hadn't smiled since.
And in his arms—
A newborn wrapped inside a white blanket.
Only three copies of that photograph had ever existed.
One had stayed with him.
One had belonged to the baby's mother.
The third...
had vanished the night she disappeared.
His knees weakened.
He slowly lowered himself to the marble floor without realizing what he was doing.
Gasps echoed through the ballroom.
"Mr. Whitmore?"
The head of security stepped forward.
"Sir?"
Adrian barely heard him.
His eyes lifted toward the maid.
"What..."
His voice cracked.
"...where did you get this?"
The young woman swallowed.
"My mother carried it every day."
Silence.
"My entire life."
Someone in the crowd laughed nervously.
"This is ridiculous."
It was Victoria Hale.
The elegant socialite Adrian had announced as his fiancée only two weeks earlier.
She crossed the ballroom confidently.
"She's obviously lying."
She looked toward security.
"Finish searching her."
The maid didn't resist.
She simply kept watching Adrian.
"My mother's name was Emily Carter."
The name hit him harder than a bullet.
Emily.
The only woman he had ever loved before wealth had swallowed his life whole.
The woman who disappeared after his father paid someone to make sure she was gone.
For twenty-five years...
May you like
he had believed she abandoned him.
Now he wasn't sure of anything.
