Chapter 3: The Man Who Didn’t Knock

The door slammed open behind Evelyn.

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN HERE?”

Nathaniel Whitmore’s voice filled the corridor like a gunshot.

He stood at the top of the stairs in a dark suit, tie loosened, eyes sharp with controlled fury. Behind him, Margaret Hale appeared instantly, pale as if she already knew the consequences.

Evelyn didn’t move.

“I was checking on her,” she said.

Nathaniel stepped forward slowly. “You were told the rules on day one.”

“She’s a child,” Evelyn replied firmly.

“That child,” he said coldly, “is not your responsibility.”

From inside the room, Charlotte appeared in the doorway.

Small.

Still barefoot.

Silent.

Nathaniel’s expression changed slightly when he saw her—but only for a moment.

Then it hardened again.

“Charlotte. Go back inside.”

Charlotte didn’t move.

Instead, she looked at Evelyn.

Then she whispered something that made the hallway go still.

“She doesn’t like when people forget her.”

Nathaniel’s jaw tightened.

“That is enough,” he said sharply.

But Charlotte continued, voice trembling now.

“She sits in the chair when I cry. She holds my hand when I can’t sleep. You said I was not allowed to talk about her… but she never left.”

Silence.

Heavy. Suffocating.

Evelyn finally understood.

The empty chair wasn’t a game.

It wasn’t imagination.

It was grief left alone too long inside a house that refused to speak its name.

Nathaniel stepped forward again—but slower this time.

“Charlotte,” he said in a lower voice, “your mother is gone.”

Charlotte flinched.

And for the first time—

she screamed.

May you like

“No, she’s not!”

The sound echoed through the mansion like something breaking.
