Chapter 2: The Truth Behind the Bruises

The emergency room fell eerily quiet after the doctor's words.

"Mr. Torres... call the police. This isn't normal."

Miguel stared at the purple bruises circling Valeria's wrists. They weren't random. They were too even, too deep—as if someone had held her down.

His heart pounded against his ribs.

"There has to be a mistake," he whispered.

The doctor met his eyes without blinking.

"I've treated hundreds of postpartum mothers. These injuries weren't caused by childbirth."

A nurse carefully wheeled Santiago into the neonatal unit. Tiny monitors surrounded the baby. His fever had climbed above one hundred and three degrees.

Miguel wanted to follow, but another nurse gently stopped him.

"We'll take care of your son."

For the first time in his life, Miguel felt completely powerless.

Minutes later, Valeria stirred.

Her eyelids fluttered.

She looked around the room in confusion before finding Miguel standing beside her.

His eyes were filled with tears he refused to let fall.

"You came back..."

Her voice barely escaped her lips.

Miguel squeezed her trembling hand.

"What happened?"

Valeria looked toward the door before answering.

"They said... they said I wasn't allowed to bother you."

Miguel frowned.

"Who?"

She swallowed painfully.

"Your mother."

The room suddenly felt smaller.

"Every time I reached for my phone... she took it away."

Miguel's face drained of color.

"What?"

"She said if I really loved you... I wouldn't distract you from work."

Valeria's breathing became uneven.

"I begged to call when Santiago stopped nursing."

She closed her eyes.

"Your sister laughed."

Miguel felt something inside him crack.

"They told me babies cry because mothers are weak."

Her voice shook.

"When I couldn't stand anymore... they tied my wrists to the bed so I wouldn't 'drop the baby while pretending to faint.'"

Miguel slowly looked back toward the bruises.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The marks.

The fever.

The dirty blanket.

The empty apartment.

None of it had been neglect.

It had been cruelty.

Just then, two police officers entered the room.

The doctor quietly handed them her medical report.

One officer asked gently,

"Mrs. Torres... are you willing to tell us what happened?"

Valeria looked at Miguel first.

Only after he nodded did she whisper,

"Yes."

May you like

And for the next hour...

She told them everything.
