Chapter 7 - The Hearing

Dominic wore navy blue to court.

The same suit he wore when he wanted investors to trust him.

Brooke sat behind his lawyer.

Victoria sat beside her.

They looked like a family.

That was intentional.

Leo was not present.

I refused to make him sit in a courtroom while adults discussed what had happened to him.

Dr. Keller testified instead.

Dominic’s attorney attacked my absence immediately.

“Mrs. Sterling spent approximately twenty-two of the last twenty-four months outside the United States.”

“Yes.”

“For work?”

“Yes.”

“Leaving her child with his father?”

“Yes.”

“Voluntarily?”

I looked at Dominic.

“At my husband’s request.”

The attorney frowned.

“He forced you?”

“No.”

“He told me the company would collapse without the Singapore contract.”

“He asked me to lead the expansion.”

“He promised our son would be safe with him.”

I slid the assignment letter toward Eleanor.

His signature sat at the bottom.

The attorney changed direction.

“Mr. Sterling contends Leo became increasingly difficult after his mother left.”

Dr. Keller testified next.

She explained that Leo had shown no comparable symptoms before my departure.

Then Eleanor played Maria’s recording.

Victoria’s voice filled the courtroom.

“If Clara comes home and sees him like this, we tell her the boy became unstable because she abandoned him.”

Dominic’s attorney objected.

Too late.

The judge had heard it.

So had Dominic.

His face went gray.

Victoria whispered angrily to Brooke.

Then Eleanor introduced the residential-placement emails.

The trust documents.

The transfers.

The hearing stopped being about whether I abandoned my son.

It became about why Dominic planned to institutionalize him weeks before a twelve-million-dollar trust transfer.

The judge extended my temporary sole custody.

Dominic received supervised visitation only.

Victoria and Brooke received no contact pending investigation.

Dominic stood as the judge left.

“Clara.”

I kept walking.

“Clara!”

I turned.

For a second, he looked like my husband again.

The man who held Leo after he was born.

The man who cried when our son first said “Daddy.”

Then I remembered the floor.

“What?”

He lowered his voice.

“You don’t understand what happened.”

“Then explain it.”

He looked toward Brooke.

That was his mistake.

I saw the answer before he spoke.

“She changed everything.”

I almost laughed.

“No.”

“You let her.”

His eyes hardened.

“You think you’re perfect?”

“No.”

“I think our son was four.”

Dominic looked away.

That night, he called my private number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

May you like

His first sentence changed the case again.

“Liam isn’t my son.”
