Chapter 1 - THE MAN BEHIND THE DOUBLE DOORS

The four security officers moved down the maternity hallway without running.
That somehow made their arrival more frightening.
They wore dark uniforms with hospital security badges clipped high on their chests.
Two stopped beside the elevators.
One positioned himself near the nurses’ station.
The fourth walked directly toward Emily.
Vanessa Cross took one uncertain step backward.
Preston Whitmore finally removed his arm from her waist.
“What is this?”
His voice still carried the irritation of a man accustomed to being obeyed.
Nobody answered him.
The double doors opened again.
A tall man in a charcoal suit stepped into the hallway.
His silver hair was cut close at the sides.
His expression was controlled.
His pace was unhurried.
Yet every administrator who saw him seemed to straighten instinctively.
Raymond Saint Claire did not look at Preston.
He did not look at Vanessa.
He went straight to Emily.
His eyes dropped to the hand she had pressed beneath her belly.
Then they moved to the red mark beginning to show along her side.
Something changed in his face.
It lasted less than a second.
Emily saw it anyway.
“Em.”
Raymond’s voice became softer.
“Are you bleeding?”
“No.”
“Cramping?”
“A little.”
“Dizzy?”
“No.”
“Did she strike your abdomen?”
Emily looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa’s face had lost some of its color.
“Her foot hit below my ribs.”
Raymond’s jaw tightened.
“Did you fall?”
“No.”
“Did Preston help you?”
Emily looked at her husband.
“No.”
The single word landed harder than a shout.
Raymond finally turned.
Preston lifted both hands slightly.
“Uncle Raymond, before this becomes ridiculous, Emily came here emotional.”
Raymond stared at him.
Preston corrected himself.
“Mr. Saint Claire.”
Raymond’s expression did not change.
“Security.”
The officer nearest them stepped forward.
“Yes, sir.”
“Lock down this section of the third floor.”
Preston laughed once in disbelief.
“You cannot lock down maternity because my wife is upset.”
Raymond kept his eyes on the officer.
“Preserve every camera feed from the moment Emily entered the building.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Preserve elevator records.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Badge access records.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Nursing station logs.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Do not permit anyone to delete, alter, export, or overwrite anything.”
Preston’s smile disappeared.
Raymond looked toward the nurse who had witnessed the attack.
“What is your name?”
“Nora Bennett.”
Her voice shook.
“Registered nurse.”
“Ms. Bennett, did you see what happened?”
Nora glanced at Preston.
Preston stared back.
Raymond noticed.
“So did I.”
Nora swallowed.
“Yes.”
“What did you see?”
“I saw Ms. Cross raise her foot.”
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“She barely touched her.”
Raymond raised one hand.
Vanessa stopped.
Nora continued.
“I saw her strike Mrs. Whitmore below the ribs.”
The hallway became silent again.
“I also saw Mr. Whitmore standing beside Ms. Cross.”
Raymond asked the next question carefully.
“Did Mr. Whitmore attempt to stop the assault?”
“No.”
“Did he assist his wife afterward?”
Nora’s eyes filled with discomfort.
“No.”
Preston stepped forward.
“This is absurd.”
One security officer shifted subtly between Preston and Emily.
That movement seemed to offend Preston more than the accusation itself.
“Do you know who I am?”
The officer remained calm.
“Yes, Mr. Whitmore.”
“Then move.”
“No, sir.”
Preston stared at him.
Vanessa whispered something under her breath.
Raymond heard it.
“What did you say?”
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“I said this is being blown out of proportion because she has an important uncle.”
Raymond looked at her white coat.
Then he looked at the designer heel that had struck Emily.
“You assaulted a woman who is thirty-two weeks pregnant inside a maternity wing.”
Vanessa’s confidence flickered.
“I pushed her away with my foot.”
“That is an interesting description.”
“She was coming toward me.”
Emily spoke for the first time since Raymond arrived.
“I was holding the railing.”
Vanessa looked at her sharply.
Emily’s voice stayed calm.
“I never moved toward you.”
“You were provoking me.”
“I asked Preston why he was here.”
“You called me his mistress.”
“I did not need to.”
Emily looked at Preston.
“You were holding her.”
Preston’s face hardened.
“Enough.”
Raymond turned toward him.
“You do not decide when she has said enough.”
Preston gave him a cold smile.
“This hospital does not become yours because your sister’s name is on the building.”
A strange silence followed.
Nora looked down.
One of the guards glanced at Raymond.
Raymond took several slow steps toward Preston.
“My sister’s name is not on this building because someone wanted decorative silver letters.”
Preston’s mouth tightened.
“My father’s family built the Whitmore network.”
“Your grandfather built three outpatient clinics.”
Raymond stopped directly in front of him.
“My family purchased the land beneath this medical center.”
Preston said nothing.
“My family financed the surgical tower.”
Raymond continued.
“My family financed the maternity pavilion.”
Preston’s eyes narrowed.
“My family funded the pediatric wing.”
Raymond’s voice remained almost conversational.
“The Saint Claire Health Trust owns sixty-two percent of this institution.”
Vanessa turned toward Preston.
Preston did not look at her.
Raymond continued.
“Whitmore Holdings owns eighteen.”
For the first time, Preston looked uncertain.
“That is not possible.”
“It is public corporate documentation.”
“My father said—”
“I know what your father says.”
Raymond’s expression sharpened.
“Your father also knows exactly how many floors I control.”
Vanessa whispered.
“Preston?”
He ignored her.
Raymond looked toward Nora.
“Get obstetrics.”
“They’re already coming.”
Two doctors were moving quickly from the end of the hallway.
Emily felt another tightness across her abdomen.
This one was stronger.
Her fingers curled around the metal railing.
Raymond saw it.
“Emily?”
“I’m fine.”
“No.”
His voice softened again.
“You do not need to be fine right now.”
Dr. Hannah Cole reached them first.
She crouched beside Emily without wasting time on introductions.
“Mrs. Whitmore, I’m Hannah Cole.”
“I’m going to examine you.”
Emily nodded.
“We need fetal monitoring immediately.”
Preston stepped toward them.
“I’m her husband.”
Dr. Cole looked up.
“Then you can wait while I determine whether your wife and child are safe.”
“I’m coming with her.”
Emily answered before the doctor could.
“No.”
Preston froze.
Emily looked directly at him.
“I don’t want you in the room.”
“Emily.”
“No.”
She had not raised her voice.
That made it impossible for him to pretend he had misunderstood.
Dr. Cole signaled to an orderly.
A wheelchair arrived.
Emily hesitated.
“I can walk.”
Dr. Cole gave her a sympathetic but firm look.
“I believe you.”
“Please sit anyway.”
Emily slowly lowered herself into the chair.
Raymond stayed beside her.
Preston tried following.
Security blocked him.
“You cannot keep me from my wife.”
Emily looked over her shoulder.
“I can.”
The doors to the examination corridor opened.
Emily disappeared behind them.
Preston stood motionless.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Preston, tell them who you are.”
He turned on her so quickly that she flinched.
“Stop talking.”
Her expression changed.
“What?”
“I said stop talking.”
Raymond watched the exchange.
Vanessa’s confidence vanished another degree.
A hospital administrator hurried from the elevator.
Daniel Ross was the medical center’s chief executive officer.
He looked as though someone had called him while he was running.
“Mr. Saint Claire.”
“Daniel.”
“What happened?”
Raymond nodded toward Nora.
“Get her statement.”
He nodded toward the cameras.
“Preserve everything.”
Then he looked at Preston.
“Deactivate his executive badge.”
Preston stared at him.
“You cannot do that.”
Daniel hesitated only briefly.
“Security access or administrative access?”
“All of it.”
Preston’s face darkened.
“I am vice chairman of the development board.”
Raymond answered immediately.
“You were given that position because Gordon asked me to keep peace between our families.”
“You have no authority to remove me without a board vote.”
“I am not removing you from the board.”
Raymond took another step closer.
“I am removing you from this building pending an investigation into violence committed against a patient while you stood beside the attacker.”
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“I am not staying here.”
She reached for the elevator button.
A security officer stepped into her path.
“Ma’am, law enforcement has been contacted.”
Her head snapped around.
“What?”
Raymond’s face remained expressionless.
“You thought I called security instead of the police?”
Vanessa looked at Preston.
He did not meet her eyes.
“You said your family could handle anything here.”
Everyone heard her.
Preston’s face went rigid.
Raymond’s eyes sharpened.
“What exactly did he tell you his family could handle?”
Vanessa realized what she had said.
“Nothing.”
Raymond waited.
Vanessa folded her arms.
“He was talking about parking tickets.”
One of the guards almost looked amused.
Preston stepped toward her.
“Do not say another word without an attorney.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“You told me this was your hospital.”
Preston lowered his voice.
“Vanessa.”
“You told me nobody here could touch us.”
“Stop.”
“You said your father owns the board.”
“Stop talking.”
Raymond looked toward Daniel.
“Did you hear that?”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Preston suddenly pointed at Raymond.
“You are enjoying this.”
Raymond’s expression finally showed anger.
“My niece is being examined to determine whether someone injured her unborn child.”
His voice dropped.
“If I were enjoying anything, you would know.”
Preston went silent.
Inside Examination Room Three, Emily lay on her left side while Dr. Cole positioned monitors across her stomach.
A rapid heartbeat filled the room.
Emily closed her eyes.
The sound of her baby’s heart had always comforted her.
Today it frightened her.
“Is he okay?”
Dr. Cole watched the monitor.
“His heartbeat is strong.”
Emily exhaled.
“But I want to keep watching.”
Emily opened her eyes.
“Why?”
“You’re having uterine tightening.”
“Contractions?”
“Possibly irritability from the trauma.”
Emily swallowed.
“Could the kick hurt him?”
“It may not have.”
Dr. Cole chose her words carefully.
“But with abdominal trauma in pregnancy, we do not assume.”
Emily nodded.
Dr. Cole examined the area beneath her ribs.
A bruise was beginning to form.
“Does this hurt?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Five.”
“Any pain lower down?”
“Not really.”
Dr. Cole watched the monitor again.
A nurse entered carrying a tablet.
“Doctor?”
Something in her tone made Dr. Cole turn.
“What is it?”
The nurse looked at Emily.
Then back at Dr. Cole.
“There is an unusual order in Mrs. Whitmore’s chart.”
Emily felt the room change.
“What order?”
The nurse hesitated.
Dr. Cole took the tablet.
Her eyebrows drew together.
“When was this entered?”
“Yesterday evening.”
“By whom?”
“It says Dr. Mercer.”
Dr. Cole frowned.
“He is not her obstetrician.”
Emily pushed herself slightly upright.
“What does it say?”
Dr. Cole did not answer immediately.
“Doctor.”
Emily’s voice became firmer.
“What does it say?”
Dr. Cole looked at her.
“It schedules you for an induction.”
Emily stared at her.
“When?”
The nurse answered.
“Two weeks from tomorrow.”
Emily’s face went still.
“I never scheduled an induction.”
Dr. Cole scrolled farther.
“There’s more.”
Emily’s hand went protectively over her belly.
“What?”
Dr. Cole looked at the screen.
Then at Emily.
“There is a psychiatric consultation attached to the order.”
Emily stopped breathing for a moment.
“I have never had a psychiatric consultation.”
The nurse looked pale.
Dr. Cole kept scrolling.
“And someone accessed your prenatal records fourteen times during the last month.”
Emily’s voice dropped.
“Who?”
The nurse looked at the access history.
“It wasn’t a doctor.”
Emily already knew before the nurse said the name.
The nurse swallowed.
“The badge credentials belong to Vanessa Cross.”
May you like
And suddenly the kick in the hallway no longer looked like the beginning of Emily’s problem.
It looked like the moment someone had finally become careless enough to expose it.
