CHAPTER THREE The Housekeeper’s Secret

By morning, Vanessa Mercer’s name was no longer glowing in society pages.

It was being whispered by attorneys.

Child protective services arrived before breakfast.

So did Logan’s lawyers.

Vanessa tried charm first.

Then tears.

Then threats.

None of them worked.

Logan had locked every account she could access and handed every recording to investigators.

But the biggest shock came from Marina.

When Logan asked why Noah had called her Mommy, Marina went silent for so long he thought she might walk away.

Instead, she reached into her worn handbag and pulled out a small silver bracelet.

Noah stared at it.

His lips parted.

Logan recognized it instantly.

It had belonged to his first wife.

Elena.

Noah’s biological mother.

She had died when Noah was only eighteen months old.

Or that was what Logan had been told.

Marina’s voice shook.

“Before Elena died, she came to the shelter where I worked.”

Logan went cold.

“She said she was afraid someone in the Mercer house wanted her gone. She said if anything happened to her, Noah needed someone who would remember the truth.”

Vanessa’s attorney, sitting nearby, went rigid.

Logan’s voice was barely audible.

“What truth?”

Marina looked at Noah, then back at Logan.

“Elena was planning to leave you.”

The words hit hard.

Not because Logan hated her for it.

Because now he understood why.

“She believed Vanessa was trying to replace her before she was even gone,” Marina said.

Logan’s face drained.

Vanessa had been Elena’s friend.

Her confidante.

The woman who comforted Logan after the funeral.

The woman who married him eleven months later.

Marina continued.

“Elena gave me the bracelet. She said Noah would recognize it one day because she used to hold it while singing to him.”

Noah reached for the bracelet with trembling fingers.

Then he whispered, “Mama.”

This time Logan heard the difference.

Marina was “Mommy.”

Elena was “Mama.”

One was safety.

One was memory.

Both had been stolen from him.

Logan turned toward the doorway where Vanessa stood between two attorneys.

For the first time, she looked truly afraid.

Because the story was no longer about a cruel stepmother.

It was about a dead woman.

A frightened child.

And a truth that had been buried under Mercer money for five years
