Chapter 2: Vanessa’s Last Weapon

Vanessa did not stay silent for long.
Three days after her arrest, the headlines began.
BILLIONAIRE WIFE FRAMED BY JEALOUS HOUSEKEEPER.
MERCER HEIR MANIPULATED BY STAFF.
LOGAN MERCER’S MARRIAGE COLLAPSES AFTER DOMESTIC SCANDAL.
The stories were everywhere.
Too polished.
Too coordinated.
Too expensive.
Vanessa had planned for this.
Even from behind legal walls, she still knew how to poison a room.
Her family hired crisis managers. Her mother appeared on television with perfect pearls and wet eyes, insisting Vanessa was a devoted mother destroyed by “hysterical accusations.”
Then came the worst part.
A petition for emergency custody.
Vanessa claimed Logan was unstable. She claimed Marina had manipulated Noah. She claimed the security footage had been taken out of context.
Logan read the filing in his office while his lawyer, Evelyn Shaw, stood across from him.
“She wants visitation,” Evelyn said.
Logan’s jaw tightened. “No.”
“She is asking the court to remove Marina from the estate.”
For the first time, Logan looked afraid.
Not for himself.
For Noah.
That evening, Noah sensed the change.
Children always knew when adults tried to hide storms.
He sat at the kitchen table while Marina placed a bowl of soup in front of him. His fingers tightened around the spoon, but he did not eat.
Logan entered slowly.
“Noah,” he said gently, “Vanessa is trying to say some things that aren’t true.”
Noah stared at the soup.
His lips parted.
No sound came.
Marina stayed nearby, quiet, patient.
Logan sat across from his son.
“You don’t have to speak,” he said. “You don’t have to explain anything. Grown-ups are going to handle this.”
Noah’s eyes filled with panic.
His hand moved suddenly.
He reached for Marina.
She took his hand.
That night, Noah had his first nightmare after Vanessa’s arrest.
A small broken sound came from his room.
Logan woke instantly.
He reached the doorway but did not rush in.
Marina was already there, kneeling beside the bed, speaking softly.
Noah clung to her sleeve, shaking.
“No lock,” he whispered.
Logan froze.
It was the first full phrase he had heard from his son in months.
Marina’s face changed, but only for a second.
“No lock,” she promised. “Never again.”
Logan stepped back into the hallway and covered his mouth.
He wanted to break every wall in that house.
The next morning, Evelyn arrived with news.
“There’s a hearing in five days.”
Logan’s eyes darkened. “Then we prove everything.”
“We have footage. Witnesses. Medical records.”
“No,” Logan said quietly. “We prove who Noah is now. Not just what she did to him.”
Evelyn studied him.

Logan looked toward the garden, where Noah sat beside Marina under an old oak tree.
“He is not evidence,” Logan said. “He is my son.”
