Chapter 8 - The Woman Behind Daniel

I wanted to blame Daniel for everything.

That would have been easier.

One spoiled son.

One greedy girlfriend.

One betrayal.

But the deeper Margaret looked, the clearer it became that Daniel had help.

We subpoenaed access logs from my home office scanning system.

Most records had been deleted.

Not all.

Nine months earlier, hundreds of documents containing my signature were scanned over three nights.

The user account belonged to Kendra.

I had underestimated her.

That was my mistake.

Kendra presented herself as decorative.

Designer dresses.

Oversized sunglasses.

Vacations photographed from carefully chosen angles.

She called business conversations “boring grown-up stuff.”

Apparently, she had been listening to every word.

Her background made the discovery even stranger.

Before meeting Daniel, Kendra worked for a litigation support firm.

She knew document systems.

She knew metadata.

She knew how signatures were authenticated.

“She reconstructed the signature,” Margaret said.

“Probably.”

“Daniel couldn’t do that.”

“No.”

“Robert?”

“Wouldn’t need to.”

Which meant Kendra was not merely spending Daniel’s money.

She was building the machinery behind the scheme.

Margaret requested her financial history.

What came back changed the shape of the entire case.

Kendra had received regular transfers from Robert for eleven months before she started dating Daniel.

I stared at the dates.

“You think Robert introduced them?”

“I think Robert may have recruited her.”

The idea sickened me.

Daniel believed he had found a glamorous girlfriend who understood him.

What if he had been manipulated too?

I rejected the thought immediately.

Being manipulated did not excuse selling my wheelchair.

It did not excuse leaving me trapped upstairs.

But truth was not supposed to be comfortable.

It was supposed to be complete.

That evening Daniel called from an unfamiliar number.

“I need to see you.”

“No.”

“Without Margaret.”

“No.”

“Mom, I found out something about Kendra.”

I remained silent.

He continued.

“She lied to me.”

“So have you.”

“This is different.”

“How?”

“Robert pays her.”

I looked at Margaret.

We had intentionally kept that discovery private.

Daniel had learned independently.

“How do you know?”

“I found messages.”

“Where?”

“On her tablet.”

His breathing was uneven.

“She’s been reporting to him.”

“Reporting what?”

“My conversations with you.”

A chill moved through me.

“She told Robert when you took medication, when you slept, when you argued with me, when you forgot something.”

I gripped the phone.

“Daniel.”

“What?”

“Why would Robert need those details unless you told him about the guardianship plan?”

Silence.

Daniel had walked into his own confession.

Finally, he said, “It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”

“What was supposed to happen?”

“I was supposed to become your guardian temporarily.”

“Why?”

“So we could stabilize everything.”

“What does that mean?”

“The company.”

Again.

Always the company.

“Robert said the board was preparing to force a sale.”

That was impossible.

No major sale could occur without my voting shares.

Unless I were declared incompetent.

Then Robert’s forged authorization would activate.

Daniel began to cry.

Not loudly.

It was worse because he tried to hide it.

“He said we would protect what Dad built.”

“No, Daniel.”

My voice remained calm.

“You were going to take control of what your father built.”

“I thought it would come back to me eventually.”

There it was.

Entitlement stripped of decoration.

Eventually.

Because he was my son.

Because I would die someday.

Because he already regarded my property as delayed inheritance.

Then Daniel whispered, “Mom, Kendra is gone.”

“Gone where?”

“I don’t know.”

“She took her passport and everything from the hotel.”

“What hotel?”

“The one I’m paying cash for.”

Despite everything, the irony almost made me smile.

Then he said, “She took the blue folder Robert gave me.”

My amusement vanished.

“What blue folder?”

May you like

“The one with the original guardianship plan.”

And according to Daniel, it contained Robert’s handwritten instructions.
