Chapter 9 - THE BENNETT SECRET

Grant laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because the accusation seemed impossible.
His father, Henry Bennett, had died five years earlier.
A respected developer.
A philanthropist.
The man Grant had spent his entire life trying to impress.
Evelyn did not look away.
“Henry Bennett funded the original Haven House network.”
Grant shook his head.
“My father donated to dozens of charities.”
“He did more than donate.”
She explained that Henry Bennett had used charitable housing programs to acquire distressed properties cheaply.
Families were relocated.
Guardianship cases were manipulated.
Children without advocates disappeared into private foster placements while valuable properties changed hands.
Victor Hale handled the legal structure.
Calvin Rourke handled intimidation.
Evelyn handled the children.
Grant felt physically ill.
“My father knew about Sophie and Luke?”
Evelyn nodded.
“He ordered Victor to keep them hidden.”
“Why?”
“Because Claire had evidence linking Henry directly to the fraud.”
Grant looked at the memory card.
“Play it.”
Owen inserted it into an offline computer.
The first recording showed Henry Bennett sitting across from Victor.
The date was seven years old.
Grant’s father looked healthy.
Powerful.
Untouchable.
Claire’s name came up.
Henry spoke calmly.
“My son is about to inherit everything.”
“He cannot be distracted by a scandal.”
Victor asked what should happen if Claire gave birth.
Henry’s answer destroyed the last illusion Grant had of him.
“Make sure Grant never knows.”
Sophie began crying.
Grant stopped the recording.
He could not let his children hear more.
He sent them with Marian.
Then he continued.
Henry had believed Grant was too ambitious to choose family over the company.
He had used Grant’s obsession with work as camouflage.
Every late night.
Every business trip.
Every deal.
They had helped Victor isolate Claire.
Grant hated himself for making the deception easier.
Rachel stopped him.
“Your father’s crimes are not yours.”
Grant looked at the screen.
“But my absence gave them room.”
Evelyn gave them the location where Claire had been held.
A Halewood facility outside Rockford.
Federal agents surrounded it before midnight.
Grant rode with Owen.
They found abandoned medical rooms.
Destroyed files.
Blood on a discarded IV line.
A wheelchair still warm from use.
Claire had been there.
Minutes earlier.
Grant found something beneath the bed.
A strand of purple beads.
Sophie’s bracelet.
Claire had left a trail.
Owen checked security footage salvaged from an exterior camera.
A black medical transport van had departed twenty-three minutes earlier.
Grant recognized the company name.
Silverline Patient Services.
Silverline.
The same name as the $400 million acquisition he had canceled when Sophie found him.
Grant suddenly understood.
Victor had planned for Grant to sign the Silverline deal that afternoon.
If he had signed it, Bennett Urban Holdings would have legally acquired the company transporting Claire.
Every illegal operation would have become part of Grant’s corporate structure.
Victor was not merely hiding evidence.
He had been preparing to make Grant legally responsible for it.
Grant called Rachel.
“Freeze the Silverline transaction.”
She answered immediately.
“I already did.”
A pause followed.
“Grant.”
“There’s a problem.”
“Your board approved an emergency vote without you.”
Grant’s stomach dropped.
“They signed the acquisition.”
May you like
Rachel’s next words were worse.
“Victor Hale is now claiming you authorized everything.”
